Carlos Sobera
Carlos Javier Sobera Prado (Baracaldo, Vizcaya, August 11, 1960) is a Spanish actor, television presenter, theater entrepreneur and former university professor.
Biography
His first contact with the theatrical world was in 1980 when he created, in Bilbao, the group La Espuela. The group remained active until 1986 and at that time performed The Lady of the Dawn by Alejandro Casona, Long live the Duke, our owner! by Alonso de Santos and Ballad of the Three Innocents by Pedro Mario Herrero.
At the same time, he graduated in Law from the University of Deusto and was a professor of Advertising at the University of the Basque Country from 1987 to 1997. Here, in 1987, and together with fellow professor and theater critic Pedro Barea, he founded the Aula de Teatro de la Universidad, where he performed, directed and produced, in addition to being the coordinator until 1995. This initiative received the Ercilla Award for the best theatrical work in 1994.
In that same year he began to work for Basque regional television (Euskal Telebista) being the scriptwriter for Boulevard, a program presented by Anne Igartiburu. In 1995 he was one of the creators of the contest Los Thursdays, moving, broadcast by TVG. He debuted as a presenter on Euskal Telebista at the head of the monthly program Ciudadanos and later with the daily magazine Arde la afternoon , along with the well-known porn actor Torbe.
In 1996 came his film debut, when he starred, with La Veneno, in the film Rigor Mortis[citation required] by Koldo Azkarreta. In 1997 he made the leap to national television, presenting the weekly space PC Adictos on La 2. However, his popularity would come as a result of his intervention in series such as Al leaving class or Quitate tú pa & # 39; Put me on, both from Telecinco.
The definitive leap to fame came in 1999 when Telecinco commissioned him to host its new daily contest, 50 for 15 Do you want to be a millionaire?. With this space he obtains multiple recognitions, such as three TP de Oro awards - including best presenter -, the Zapping Award and the Sixth Avenue award for best communicator. His peculiar way of asking questions, raising his eyebrows, gave him great popularity. He combines his time on Telecinco with the presentation of other contests on regional television, among which Date elbot, on ETB2, stands out., which remains on the air for seven seasons (2002-2009).
In parallel to his television success, he participated in several films such as End of Journey by Pedro Zancajo, El forastero by Federico García Hurtado, Hasta here we have arrived!!! by Yolanda García Serrano or The upside down shirt by Javier Elorrieta. In theater, she starred alongside Àngels Gonyalons in the play Chained Words, directed by Tamzin Townsend.
In 2004 he left Telecinco to join Antena 3, which commissioned him to host multiple contests, such as Is there a deal?, Números locas, 1 contra 100, The invention of the century or Jeopardy, most of which were canceled prematurely due to their audience results.
Also on Antena 3, Sobera returns to lead 50x15, now under the title Who wants to be a millionaire?, which manages to become the most popular contest watched on television in Spain in 2006, with more than three million viewers and a 23% screen share. The success of the audience is confirmed with two TP de Oro awards for the best contest in 2005 and 2006, and a nomination for Sobera as best entertainment program host in 2005.
In April 2008 his signing for Televisión Española was announced, thus closing his time at Antena 3. On July 9 of that year he debuted as a presenter on La 1 with the contest Canta! Singstar , although weeks before he had already served as master of ceremonies at the 2007 ATV Awards gala, broadcast by the same network. Throughout 2009 he presented the program The best years of our lives , with great audience success. So much so as to launch a theatrical tour based on the program. Six months later, in January 2010, he began presenting the contest La Lista, on La 2. That same year he worked on 7RM television in Murcia and presented the television program Consumidores, focused on consumer rights, will also present it at ETB2, together with Adela González months later.
In February 2011 he returned to national television to present, once again, a contest titled Atrapa unmillion, based on the British format The Million Pound Drop Live, in this case on Antena 3. Atrapa un Millon remained on the air until September 8, 2014. In March 2011, on the same network, the daily contest The third in discord, being withdrawn a few weeks later. In 2012, this same network premiered another program called Avanti ¡que passé el tiempo! with collaborations such as Mag Lari or Angy Fernández. On August 3, Avanti ¡que passe ended the next one! On December 31, 2015 he leaves Atresmedia after presenting the bells on Antena 3.
Fired by Mediaset, in April 2016 he began presenting the dating show First Dates on Cuatro.
During the month of August 2016, he began presenting the program That's what I do! on La Sexta, which was recorded in 2014 and broadcast in the summer of 2016.
In 2019, Mediaset introduced him to its reality shows as one of its regular faces alongside presenters such as Jorge Javier Vázquez or Jordi González. Since then, he has counted on him to host the second weekly galas of spaces such as Survivientes, Big Brother VIP or Secret Story: The House of the secrets.
Also on Telecinco it presented the Volverte a ver format within the network's prime time, combining it with the recordings of First Dates, broadcast in Cuatro, although he is usually absent from some programs due to various projects.
Curiosities
In 2016 he took the risk of buying the Reina Victoria theater in Madrid, where the play Cyrano de Bergerac was performed. He paid 7 million euros for this setting, a property located a few minutes from Puerta del Sol and in 2018 he sold it for 9.4 million euros to Pescaderías Coruñesas, whose founder Evaristo García Gómez acquired the company Arequipa Producciones de Sobera. They state that income was falling dangerously, while expenses were multiplying and they go so far as to affirm that they have the company in the red. Sobera would have created it in 2003, with his wife Patricia Santamarina joining five years later. The accounts were going well thanks to producing his own plays, but in 2018 the losses were considerable and the expenses did not balance the situation.
