Carlos Ruiz was born and raised in the Bellos Horizontes neighborhood in zone 21 of Guatemala City, and is known by the nickname El Pescadito.

As a curious fact, Carlos Ruiz has always preferred to wear #20 on his jersey in the teams he has played for, with the exception of Toronto FC where he wore #25, Club Olimpia where he wore #29, Aris FC in who used the #11 camisole and the Guatemalan National Team in which, for reasons of change of image, he wore #9.

CSD Municipal

He began his sports career in the youth categories of CSD Municipal, where he played from 1991 to 1995. He made his professional debut at the same club in 1995 in a match where CSD Municipal faced Xelajú Mario Camposeco, and scored his first goal as a professional against Azucareros team in 1996 playing the Gallo Cup.
