Carl Adolph Agardh
Carl Adolph Agardh (Båstad, January 23, 1785 - Karlstad, January 28, 1859) was a Swedish mathematician, botanist, mycologist, pteridologist, and algologist specialized in algae and was designated as bishop in Karlstad.
Biography
He was appointed professor of Botany and Economic Practice at Lund University in 1812, becoming the leading scientist in "algology" of his time. The initial of him & # 34; Synopsis algarum Scandinaviae & # 34; (1817) he would later expand it into his & # 34; Species algarum & # 34; (1821–1828) and his & # 34; Systema algarum & # 34; (1824), and his broader vision of the natural system in Botany would be presented in the series "Aphorismi botanici" (1817–1826) and in his 'Classes plantarum' (1825).
Agardh's systematic view is strongly influenced by "Naturphilosophie" German, and in 1827 he would come into contact with the philosopher Friedrich Schelling in Karlsbad, where together they would examine the development of algae in the mineral springs of Karlsbad.
He was ordained a clergyman in 1816 and received two parishes as a prebend. He was the Grand Rector of Lund University between 1819-1820. When he was appointed bishop of Karlstad in 1835, he abandoned botany to devote himself to the duties of his office in Karlstad, where he remained until his death.
He was a representative in the clerical chamber of the Swedish Parliament on several occasions since 1817, he was elected member of the Swedish Academy in 1831. His botanical specialty was algae.
He was also known as a mathematician, an economist and a politician. In his last positions in Parliament he had more impulsive inclinations, his actions were guided more by ideals than by affiliation to any political doctrine.
