Geography
The island of Capri is located in the southern part of the Gulf of Naples, in continuity with the Sorrento peninsula, ending in Punta Campanella, opposite the islands of Procida and Ischia (located in the northern part of the same Gulf of Naples).
The Greek historian and geographer Strabo, in his "Geography" considered that Capri was once connected to the mainland. This hypothesis was recently confirmed, and supported by the same geological characteristics that the island presents with the Sorrento Peninsula, and by archaeological findings.
Two different urban centers coexist on the island both because of their geographical separation and because of their traditions and ethnic origin: Capri and Anacapri. These differences are explained by the natural proximity of Capri to the sea: The presence of the port has indeed facilitated commercial and cultural exchanges with the Kingdom of Naples and has consequently determined a greater economic development.
The two communities were in eternal conflict, each bent on defending its own rights, exasperated by the lack of true autonomy, which forced them, over the centuries, to accept the burdensome claims of administrators sent across the mainland to control the local economy.
