The animated series, in the key of melodrama, tells the story of Candy, who in 1898, on May 7 during the boreal spring, is abandoned as a baby in the snow with a doll that has the name of Candy, from hence the name given to her: Candice White, called by all Candy; the same night, they find another baby Annie. They both grow up near Lake Michigan, in LaPorte Indiana, in a home for orphans run by Miss Pony and Sister Maria. In the anime it happens on a winter night, Annie being found first at the foot of the door while Candy is found almost miraculously lying on the side of the road in the middle of the snowfall minutes from being covered by snow; After being found on a snowy night, Sister Maria decides to give Candy the surname White.
At Pony's Home
After spending their entire childhood in the orphanage and growing up together as sisters, Annie and Candy become inseparable to the point of vowing never to leave Pony's Home or be separated from each other. Pony's home, and especially not to break their promise to Annie. However, the Britter family, seeing that Candy does not want to be adopted, makes the same offer to Annie, who she accepts without hesitation; so Candy sees her innocence disappointed by the firm desire of her friend to have parents. In the manga, the situation is reversed since it is Annie (who is also blonde in the manga) who the Britters want to adopt from the beginning due to her resemblance to their deceased daughter, Annie being the one who opposes it but Candy insists. for him to accept
Time has passed and Candy waits every day for the letters that her best friend promised to write her daily, but to no avail since the postman never brings anything for her. Finally, one day Annie tells Candy that she simply won't write, as her adoptive mother advises her not to let her new friends find out that she comes from an orphanage. Heartbroken, Candy runs to Pony Hill and there she meets for the first time her & # 34; Prince of the Hill & # 34;, her first love, a young man from approx. A 17-year-old dressed in a Scottish suit and playing the bagpipes, who pronounces the most popular phrase in the series:
- "Why are you crying, you're much prettier when you laugh than when you cry.".
The "prince" he leaves without saying his name, but loses a brooch that Candy keeps as an amulet. Since that day, Candy tries to be adopted.
Hosted by the Leagan Family
At the age of 10 (four years after Annie's departure in the manga, but only a few months according to the anime), Candy is taken in by the Leagan family to become the lady of company of Eliza, daughter of the family. Candy discovers that the family crest is very similar to the one on the prince's amulet, finding out that both families are connected, so she accepts, hoping there is a chance to see him again. However, since she arrives at the Leagan residence, she is the victim of Eliza's pranks and her brother Neil's, who greet her by throwing a bucket of water at her from the balcony; even so, she Candy is determined to become a Lady and not listen to any of Eliza and Neil's tricks to throw her out of her house. Despite this, they both do their best to annoy Candy until she is demoted from a lady-in-waiting to a servant and forced to live in the stables with the horses.
Walking through the nearby woods one day, Candy meets a handsome and ostentatious young man named Archie, when the boat the boy was taking a nap in drifted away from the riverbank and Candy helped him get back safely. From that moment Archibald "Archie" Cornwell fell in love with Candy.
Later, when Eliza abandons Candy in a town a day's walk from the mansion, she meets a young man with a passion for mechanics and science named Alistair "Stear" Cornwell. The boy offers to take her in the car that he built himself, but due to the poor quality of the machine they end up in the river after a long fall; Despite this, Stear is impressed by the beautiful Candy since she is the first person to look respectfully at her inventor facet, which arouses his interest.
Annie finds out that Candy is an employee at Elisa's house, but still follows her mother's imposition and pretends she doesn't know her and can't do more than give her a ribbon as a symbol of their friendship. Elisa and Neil accuse Candy of stealing Annie's tape along with other things, and Candy runs out of the house, crying without looking where she is going. This is how she, without realizing it, reaches the front of a portal surrounded by a garden of roses. It is here when Candy sees Anthony for the first time and is very surprised to see him, because he is exactly the same as Prince of the Hill, although it seems impossible because he doesn't seem to recognize her and he looks similar in age to the boy. that he met years ago. However, what surprised him the most was that he said exactly the same sentence as the "prince": "Little freckled girl, you are much prettier when you laugh than when you cry& #3. 4;. This is one of her crucial moments, as she recognizes in the insignia that she found on the hill is the coat of arms of the house. The boy disappears without saying anything just like the prince.
One day there is a big dance, the Leagans are invited, but they are surprised to see that Stear and Archie have each invited Candy on their own. They take her and there she meets their cousin, Anthony Brower , the boy from the portal of roses. The three boys shower her with attention and Candy enjoys her first dance. Stear, Archie and Anthony don't get along with the Leagan brothers either. The three are raised by Great-Aunt Elroy, second authority in the family after Willian Ardley family patriarch (In the Latin version the expression patriarch is erroneously replaced by & #34;Uncle Grandpa"). After this Elisa's hatred towards Candy worsens as she longs for Anthony's love and the benefits of a commitment to him, but it is evident that he loves the young orphan. During the party Anthony comments that he only knows her since her meeting in her doorway and Candy, convinced that he is her prince, assumes that she has forgotten her previous meeting.
The Ardleys are one of the most powerful families in America and are neighbors to the Leagans. Elisa and Neil also belong to the Ardley clan, therefore they are cousins to Archie, Stear and Anthony, which justifies the similarity of their family crests. The boys maintain their friendship with Candy despite the fact that the Leagans spare no effort in trying to tarnish her image. In May Anthony gives her a new breed of rose, calling the flower "Sweet Candy" and declaring that that day is her new birthday.
Candy's destiny leads her to meet a young man named Albert, a hermit with a thick beard, long hair and dark glasses that hide his eyes, he is a lover of nature who lives without permission in the forests of Ardley grounds with his animals and became Candy's great friend since he saved her life when she was about to fall into a waterfall. Albert will always help her in her worst moments and advise her.
Because of the Leagan brothers' antics, the parents decide to get rid of Candy by sending her to live on a family farm located in an arid and isolated area in the Mexican desert. Convinced by the Leagans that he is a bad person, Great-Aunt supports this decision and prevents her nephews from helping her, so Candy sees the only salvation as writing to Albert asking for his help, unfortunately before he can do anything, the ranger The Ardleys discover him living without permission on the property and must go on the run. This is how Candy is forced to travel in the company of a cruel and unscrupulous man, making her journey unpleasant and painful. On the way she is kidnapped and after escaping from her captor she returns to the Ardleys' house.
Upon arrival, she learns that her supposed kidnapper, George, is actually Great-Uncle William's right-hand man and that he had come looking for her on his orders. Stear, Archie, and Anthony had written to the head of the family, that is, Great-Uncle, asking him to adopt her. George gives Great-Aunt Elroy a note and Candy's adoption papers. Thus, at the age of 12, Candy is adopted by Great-Uncle William, forming part of the Ardley family, going to live at Lakewood Mansion with her friends Archie, Stear and Anthony.
Candice White Ardley
At the Ardleys', Candy lives happy moments. The three young people, inspired by Candy, are more open to thinking for themselves, although in the eyes of the great-aunt they are acts of rebellion, this because she is constantly manipulated by the slander that the Leagans, whom she holds in high esteem, have given her. told about Candy and blames the young woman for the bad influence she believes she exerts on the boys, but over time she begins to appreciate her although she does not openly admit it and the few attempts by both of them to get closer are sabotaged by the Leagans. The old woman always reminds them that they must behave for the honor of the Ardleys. One day, Anthony rudely yells at Aunt Grandma and she punishes him for having fought with Tom with a pawn, without knowing why there was such a fight, as a punishment by sending him to the house in the woods. There Anthony befriends Tom, who grew up with Candy before being adopted by a farmer. Anthony is happy as he learns to be strong and independent. And he decides to participate in a local rodeo. Great Aunt Elroy lets Anthony participate on the condition that she wins and she does. From the carriage she cheers for him, hidden because she, due to her position and dignity, cannot appear at a show like this.
Then Candy runs away with Anthony to the town and they declare their love for each other since they have been dating for a year, there Candy learns Anthony's story and the reason for his passion for roses.
In the fall, there is a big family event, a fox hunt. It is Candy's public presentation to society. Anthony and Candy separate from the group and he tells her that he thinks he has finally solved the mystery of the Prince of the Hill and that he will tell her about it, but suddenly his horse steps into a fox trap and Anthony falls hitting his head, instantly losing his life. From that moment on, Candy's life changes completely, becoming introverted and sad, and she spends weeks locked up crying over her death.
Neil enters Anthony's room to take his clothes with Great Aunt's permission, while, on the other hand, Eliza blames Candy for what happened with Anthony and tries to take the roses with Great Aunt's permission, but Candy this time opposes and receives the support of all the employees of the house. In the manga, Annie, with her father's permission, goes to visit Candy unseen by any of the Ardleys, to lift her spirits and support her over Anthony's death.
Candy decides to return to Pony's home. All the roses die and the only one that blooms is a "Sweet Candy", which she decides to take with her to Pony's home. At Pony's home he slowly recovers and after a while he is visited by Albert who has returned, but he does not immediately recognize him as he is now shaved and with shorter hair, Candy discovering only at this moment that he is actually much older. younger than she thought. Albert tells her that she has to get over it, since many people live with sadness and that she must remember all the love that Anthony gave her. Stear and Archie go to visit her and tell her they are going back to England. A few months later, George arrives with the mission of taking Candy to study at the "Real Colegio San Pablo" in London, England, with the aim of receiving an education and becoming a lady.
At the Real Colegio San Pablo
It is January 1911 and 13-year-old Candy is transferred to London to study at the Royal College of Saint Paul. On the boat trip she meets Terry Grandchester , who at first reminds her of Anthony, since they both look alike from behind; he actually thinks he sees Anthony's ghost at first, but as he gets closer he realizes it's not him, "he's not blond and he's taller than Anthony", although Terry's difficult character, who can change his mood very easily, makes her hate him.
Terry is the son of the famous actress Eleanor Baker. This should not be told to anyone, since her father separated from her to save the honor of her family and remarried since the Grandchesters are a prestigious family of English nobles, which makes Terry an illegitimate child.. Terry was returning from the United States from visiting his mother and was very sad when he met Candy on the boat on the way to London. Candy doesn't like Terry's comments because he starts making fun of her freckles and her nose.
At school, Candy meets Stear and Archie again, as well as Elisa and Neil, who keep trying to make life miserable for her, especially Elisa, who ensures that everyone immediately finds out that she is an orphan girl and that was the one who "murdered" to Anthony, according to his version of events. Luckily for Candy, she discovers that Terry also studies at the same school. Terry constantly fights, smokes, gets drunk and breaks all the rules. Even so, they do not expel him because his father contributes a lot of money to the school. One day, Neil and several of his friends mistreated Candy, but Terry defends her and hits Neil, changing the young woman's opinion of him a bit.
Befriends Patricia "Patty" O'Brien , who at first avoids Candy like the others for coming from Pony's Home, however one day her grandmother sneaks into school to stay with her; It is Candy who finds Grandma and helps Patty by hiding the old lady in her room, becoming great friends in the end.
He is also surprised when Annie is admitted to the school. Annie enters the Real Colegio San Pablo chasing Archie, whom she loves, but fears that Candy will win him over, she also decides to distance herself from Candy, to prevent others from finding out that she is also an orphan from the Pony Home. Annie confronts Candy when she finds out that Archie loves her. Candy makes it clear that she doesn't like Archie and makes her see reason. Archie realizes that Candy will never reciprocate him and gives up his attempts to push Annie away. In the discussion about Archie, Annie tells Candy that she has always been everyone's favorite, including Miss Pony and Sister Mary, this is heard by Eliza, who from then on takes it upon herself to inform the entire College of Annie's origin, when she sees that there is no point in continuing to avoid Candy to escape from the past, she decides to reconcile with her and thus they both become best friends again.
Albert also travels to London while Candy is at school, working as a keeper at the city zoo and becoming great friends with Terry Grandchester. This is how Candy discovers that, in reality, she doesn't like Terry so badly and even begins to attract him.
It is at the Real Colegio San Pablo where, little by little, Candy steals Terry's heart. He, in turn, manages to make Candy forget Anthony since his death affected him in such a way that he became phobic about horses. Unfortunately, Eliza also begins to fall in love with Terry and thus begins the misfortunes for Candy and Terry because of her envy.
It's May 1912 and a party is held at the boarding school, Candy is chosen to be the spirit of the flowers along with all the birthdays that month (Candy's 14th birthday). Because of Eliza she is punished, forbidding her to attend the party. Grand-Uncle William sends her a couple of costumes for the occasion, one for Romeo and the other for Juliet, and she uses them alternately to attend the party, thus evading the chaperones and Eliza's accusations. She later dances with Terry on the hill in the school park, which she had previously dubbed 'Second Pony Hill'.
During the summer, Sister Gray, the headmistress of the school, forces Candy to go with all the other students to Scotland; Annie and Patty are also there, along with Eliza, Neil, Archie and Stear, who are at the Ardley residence on the shores of a lake. Surprisingly, Terry decides to go on vacation to his father's house, on the opposite shore of the lake. During that time, Candy and Terry's relationship grows stronger. There Candy meets Terry's mother, Eleanor Baker, who is a famous American actress. Candy helps Terry to reconcile with her mother and makes the young man recognize that, like her, he loves acting and wishes to follow in her footsteps. One day while they were dancing on the shores of the lake, Terry gives his first kiss to Candy, who, impressed, responds with a slap.
Upon returning to the School, Candy and Terry maintain their romance but Eliza, jealous, sets a trap for them to meet in the stable during the night in order for Sister Gray to discover them, so she is, in Punishment, he expels Candy from school and locks her in an old mill while he confines Terry to his room for a week, since the Duke of Granchester, Terry's father, makes large contributions of money to the school, without which, it cannot it could still work.
Stear and Archie learn from Patty and Annie that Candy has been expelled from school. They both face Terry thinking that he was the one who caused everything. Terry clarifies that it was all a trap and shows them the letter he received where he said that Candy was waiting for him that night in the stable. They both recognize Eliza's handwriting.
Stear and Archie tell Terry about their fears that as soon as Great-Uncle William finds out that Candy has been expelled from the Real Colegio San Pablo, he will annul the adoption and she will end up on the streets with nothing to survive on. After unsuccessfully appealing to her father to advocate for Candy, Terry decides to leave school to save her; Sister Gray agrees and changes Candy's punishment by ordering her to spend a week in confinement in her room.
Candy returns to her room and at nightfall notices that the light in Terry's room is not on. She thus discovers that he has dropped out of school to save her, heading back to America. So, Candy leaves for the Southampton harbor to catch up with Terry before her ship leaves. Despite her best efforts, she doesn't reach it.
After being once again part of the tricks of Neil, Eliza and their friends, Candy understands that the school and its rules are not only something she will never be accepted into, but also represent becoming something she He has never wanted or liked it, therefore he decides to abandon his studies and leave the school, now being a meaningless place without Terry and also thinking that the fact of studying at the Real Colegio San Pablo does not mean that it is necessary for him to she be a Lady; She thus decides to return to America, to Pony's home and also to look for Terry. It is the winter of 1914.

Anthony's hobby is to cultivate roses, to honor the memory of his deceased mother Rosemary (Pauna, in some translations). Anthony liked Candy because he has a great resemblance to his deceased mother. Anthony is a young gentleman, kind, sensitive and just. A woman who sees luck prevents her from being careful. One day, leaving with Candy a fox hunt dies when he falls off his horse.
- William Albert Ardley (Albert): Albert is a young man who likes simple life and nature, loves to travel and interact with the animals, thanks to which they are very good with Candy when he campes for a while on the Ardley grounds, he is greater than Candy and his other male friends and also a person of mature character and firm convictions, as time passes he travels through different cities and countries, thanks to which he constantly coincides with Candy in many places. It's actually Uncle Grandpa William and the hill prince: his name is William Albert. At a very early age it becomes the head of the Andley family, after his parents and his sister, Rosemary (Albert is Anthony's uncle) die leaving him as the only heir. It is Aunt Grandma Elroy who does not allow him to reveal his identity, and that is why everyone knows him as "Albert". Albert adopts Candy, which makes him his legal guardian and "adoptive father." The expression "Grandpa"used in Spanish to refer to it corresponds to a free translation of the phrase "..........", whose closest approach would really be under the concept of "Patriarch".
- Archibald.Archie"Cornwell Ardley: Archie is Stear's brother. He belongs to the Andley family, so he's Anthony's cousin, Eliza and Neil and later Candy's adoption. Archie is the most elegant group of the Ardleys. He meets Candy by chance and feels attracted to her, despite this and respect for this love by Anthony does not express it openly until they are in St. Paul's College, where he decides to express his love now that he has no boyfriend even though this shows no interest and the constant harassment of Annie Brighton, finally resigns himself to that Candy only sees him as a friend and accepts Annie's love and initiates such intense feelings with her.
- Alistair "Stear"Cornwell Ardley: Brother of Archie, Stear is dedicated to inventing things. He's part of the Ardley family, Anthony's cousin, Eliza, Neil and Candy. Like Anthony and Archie, Candy steals his heart. At St. Paul's school he knows Patty, with whom he can forget Candy. Stear has the idea of enlisting to go to war. When Candy goes with Terry to meet him, Stear joins in aviation and then dies in an air fight.
- Clint: Exclusive character of the anime. It's an albino raccoon and Candy's pet. At first, Clint belonged to Annie but she gave it to Candy because she couldn't take care of him when he was adopted by the Britters, a very rich family. Clint was always next to Candy except when she went to study infirmary to Chicago, because she couldn't take him to the Santa Juana Academy. On one occasion Clint comes to pretend dead when Candy arrives in England and George shows him the decision to leave Clint in a zoo, he escapes and goes up to the branch of a tree. A hunter watching him shoots him even if he fails, everyone thinks he's dead, but then Clint hears Candy's voice wakes up. He actually faked his death when he was in danger.
- Annie Britter or Brighton: She's a very shy girl and she's Candy's best friend. Annie was found the same day she was abandoned at the Pony House. When the Britters (or Brighton) come to the orphanage they decide to adopt Candy, but this despite being their dream is denied since along with Annie they never promised to let anything separate them, unfortunately by making the same offer to Annie it accepts without hesitation; as a result of this fact they try to forget their past, opting to sacrifice their friendship with Candy as their parents shame that people are adopted. However, in the Royal College of St. Paul both girls are back and although he initially supports not knowing Candy and insists on ignoring it, it does not prevent him from making promises in the name of friendship between them that will not approach Archie and help him conquer it. Finally Eliza discovers that it is an orphan of the Pony House like Candy and discloses it making it a rejected one after which reason that there is no longer need to hide her friendship with Candy.
- Aunt Grandma Elroy (or Aunt Grandma): Matriarca of the Andley family, Aunt Abuela is a very strict person, but that does not prevent him from wanting his grandchildren Archie, Stear and Anthony a lot. After a while, although he did not originally approve the idea of adopting Candy, he began to take care of him, but when Anthony died, he became much more severe with Candy. Actually, he's a very sensitive person. When Albert's parents and sister died, as he was very small, he had to keep secret the heir's identity and manage family affairs until the child grew up.
- Susana Marlow: Susana is an actress who works for the same theater company as Terry. She's been in love with him ever since she met him. One day Susana loses her leg by trying to save Terry and her mother pressures Terry to marry her by taking advantage of the accident. Susana knows that Terry loves Candy and tries to kill herself, but Candy's keeping him from the promise that she'll leave Terry. Still, Susana doesn't get Terry to forget Candy, her big love.
- Patricia"Patty"O'Brian: It was one of the friends that Candy met at St. Paul's school. Patty is a sweet, tender and shy girl, so in a beginning not to contradict the rest of the students also makes the ice law to Candy; however, after her grandmother visits her and flies in the dormitories without permission she immediately congenies with Candy as this help and after this she openly behaves like her friend and stays next to her at the College. Patty falls in love with Stear and both come to have a solid fiancée until Stear's death, so Patty is desolate and decides to go to Florida where her grandmother is (on the sleeve, after Stear's death, tries to kill herself).
- Iriza/Eliza Leagan: It is one of the villains of history. His family also belongs to the Ardley clan. Along with his brother Neil makes Candy impossible every time he has a chance. She's a hypocritical, cynical, lying girl. Thanks to her and Neil, contrary to their purposes, is that Candy is adopted by the Ardleys. She envy Candy because she's in love with Anthony and he only has eyes for Candy, plus the personality of Candy captiva whom she knows, which can't stand Eliza because she always wants to be the center of attention. Then she also falls in love with Terry at St. Paul's school and is the one who makes Terry and Candy split up.
- Neil Leagan: Brother of Eliza, he is almost always accomplice of his evil plans. He's a cowardly, lying, and very pityed by his mom. He's part of the Ardley family. Like Eliza, try to make Candy's life impossible every time she can. Ironically, he ends up falling in love with her and tries to force her to marry him though, he doesn't.
- Miss Pony: It owns an orphanage named El Hogar de Pony (Pony's Home), which is located in a mountainous area south of Lake Michigan. Ms. Pony is a good mature-aged woman with a thick and medium-sized contour, who together with Sister Maria care for orphaned children, until they are adopted by some family. Although Ms. Pony and Sister Maria are not considered as adoptive mothers of the children they care for, but as their teachers, they often manifest a great maternal love for the children. Miss Pony and Sister Maria took care of Candy when she was abandoned along with Annie on the outskirts of the orphanage, then Annie was adopted by the Britters and Candy by the Leagans and later by the Andleys, hence her influence during the early years of Candy was really important. After Candy is adopted, she keeps in touch with Miss Pony and Sister Maria through letters or visits.
- Sister Maria: She is a religious, who together with Miss Pony care for orphaned children who are left in the Pony House. Sister Maria is a young woman of good character although a little stricter than Miss Pony, whom Candy respected for being a figure of authority in the Pony House, this becomes evident in several situations, such as when Candy doesn't want to go to study London and flee with Jimmy in the rain, causing the child to get sick, so Candy gets upset, at that time Sister Maria gives her a control.
- Flamie Hamilton: She is a young nursing student at the Mery Jane academy and Candy roommate at that academy. Flamie is a very bitter and very strict and severe girl, who at all times demonstrates her antipathy towards Candy, as the personality of both is totally contrary. Flamie's bitterness is because she comes from a dysfunctional family and tries to hide her suffering in her severity. Flamie together with Candy and 3 other students (Nathalie, Judy and Eleanor), is transferred to the Hospital Santa Juana de Chicago, with the aim of learning more advanced surgical techniques, being there they ask for a volunteer nurse for the battle front in France and Flamie offers to go. At the right time of departure, it is evident that Flamie continues to feel antipathy by Candy, due to her cheerful and honest character, however Flamie is aware that Candy has all the qualities to become an excellent nurse and therefore respects her very much.
- Mery Jane: She is the director of the academy where Candy is going to study nursing. It is a very friendly maid of Miss Pony and of a severe and strong character, as director is very strict and always calls Candy "Torpe", for the constant mistakes that he made the first days at the academy; however in the background Mery Jane feels a lot of appreciation for Candy and the flame "My Little Naughty," although Candy does not know. Mery Jane believes that Candy's affectionate treatment of patients and professionalism and Flamie Hamilton's responsibility are virtues in a good nurse, hence that both at the Academy and at the Santa Juana Hospital, Mery Jane orders that Candy and Flamie are roommates, as both complement each other perfectly without realizing it, even though they don't take it completely well.
- Tom Steve: He is a young man who, together with Candy and Annie, grew up at the Pony House, until he was adopted by Mr. Steve, the owner of a large cattle ranch. Tom is two years older than Candy and it was the one who heard Annie's crying when she was abandoned outside the Pony House together with Candy. Unlike Annie, Tom continues to have good relations with Candy and Pony's Home after being adopted, and in the same way he comes to a great friendship with Anthony.
- Mrs. Leagan: She is the mother of Eliza and Neil, her children are all for her, she is responsible for them being liars, spoiled, vain and selfish. At first she adopts Candy to be a lady of Eliza's company, but this convinces her to become her maid, to what she easily accesses, Mrs. Leagan on some occasions becomes more evil than Eliza, compelling Canrich to kneel by apologies to her children, also forces Candy to go to live in Chicago, no matter how dangerous Canplidy did the farewell
- Eleanor Baker: She's Terry's mother, when she was young, had an affair with Grandchester's Duke, but the Duke ended up with that romance because she wasn't of pure lineage, she decided to leave Terry in charge of the Duke, for which Terry felt a lot of grudge to her, after this she dedicated herself to being an actress, of which she became the most outstanding actress of the time, Terry went to visit her a winter, but she didn't

In countries like Italy, France, Canada, Indonesia and South Korea, Candy Candy was very popular. In the United States, ZIV International acquired the rights to the series and dubbed the first episodes with a new musical theme, releasing them directly to home video in 1981, although it failed to transcend.
Chilean outcome of the anime
In the 1980s in Chile, the UCV TV signal acquired the rights to broadcast the animated series, being the first anime broadcast by the channel as part of the children's program Pipiripao. Although at that time Chilean viewers were not familiar with Japanese animation, Candy's story, which has the classic structure of a telenovela, aroused great interest among viewers and was one of the largest sources of ratings for UCV TV.
However, during the first broadcast cycle of the series, the tape with the last chapter had problems during its shipment to Chile, so it was not delivered to the channel and the team was faced with the problem of being on the broadcast date of the episode without having the material to project. Looking for an alternative solution Víctor Bielefeld, manager of the channel, was informed by long-distance call abroad regarding what were the events that were happening in the last chapter and, taking this as a general idea, the team improvised a script where the same workers of the channel fulfilled the work of voice actors, characterizing the characters as far as possible; later, material from previous chapters was recycled to create scenes that resembled the description they had been given about this episode and this was broadcast instead of the official denouement. Subsequently, reruns of the series featured the official ending.
Italian anime ending
When the original end of the series was broadcast in Italy, those in charge thought that it was not suitable for all audiences due to its high dramatic content, and worried that fans would be disappointed to see an outcome where love does not triumph, since Since Terry and Candy don't end up together, they decided to extend the series by creating (through editing and recycling scenes) an unofficial ending.
Candy finds out from the newspaper that Terry is divorced, so she travels to New York to meet her. In the final scene, she appears arriving by train at a station where Terry is waiting for her. The extra chapter ends when they hug each other while Terry tells her: "I will never leave you again, I love you! How much I have desired this moment..., how much I have dreamed of it! Our love will last a lifetime". This scene was taken from the occasion when Candy met Terry in New York and they edited it with Italian editing and dubbing.
Legal controversy
Since 1998, the series has been prohibited from being broadcast in all countries of the world due to a legal process between Igarashi and Mizuki over the Candy Candy copyright. The conflict began when Igarashi released Candy Candy merchandise without Mizuki's knowledge. Igarashi insisted that, as the author of the drawings, she did not need Mizuki's permission to market Candy Candy products. required permission from both authors: Mizuki, first, and Igarashi, second. Currently, the writer Kyōko Mizuki is authorized to commercialize the Candy Candy story (without illustrations), but the cartoonist Yumiko Igarashi cannot legally commercialize the drawings or products based on this story. In 2007, Igarashi Yumiko tried to market merchandise under the name "Lady Lady" in Taiwan with characters identical to Candy, Anthony, and Terry, so Toei Animation intervened.
Novels
The Candy Candy/小説キャンディ・キャンディ novels were written by Kyōko Mizuki as a novelization of the original Candy story that was made for the manga and consist of three volumes. These books were published by Kōdansha Ltd and the covers designed by Yumiko Igarashi. Volume 1 (May 1978), in narrative format, ranges from finding Candy at Pony's Home to Anthony's death and her return to Pony's Home. Volume 2 (November 1978), in narrative format, ranges from her trip to London for her admission to the Real Colegio San Pablo until she leaves it. Volume 3 (April 1979), in epistolary format, through letters sent or received by various characters, his adventures are told from his trip to the USA after leaving school in London until some time after discovering that Albert is not only the great-uncle William, but also her Prince on the Hill. Candy and Albert maintain a fluent correspondence after the discovery of these facts.
In 1990 a reissue was made with different designs by Yumiko Igarashi for the covers. In 2003, as a result of the conflict over copyright and thanks to a fan vote in Fukkan, a reissue was made by Book-Ing that brings together the 3 novels in a single volume and has no illustrations.
Mizuki says she has distanced herself from the influence of manga art and rewrites the story again.
On October 28, 2010, under her real name Keiko Nagita, she was published under the title Candy Candy Historia Final /小説「キャンディ・キャンディ FINAL STORY」, under the Shodensha imprint. and the three parts are divided into two volumes, details of the life of an adult Candy in her 30's who remembers her past one windy spring day are also included. The annotations in furigana with the reading of the kanji are not part of this edition, making its content focused on an adult audience.
The main news to Candy Candy Final Story are that Candy currently lives on the banks of a river Avon in the UK, Pony's Home is under reconstruction, Archie and Annie have married, The Legans are engaged in the hotel business with great success, Susana has died. Terry writes a letter to Candy saying that she hasn't changed. The identity of Candy's husband is not revealed, but Nagita said that she was satisfied knowing that Candy now lived a happy life with the man she loved.
In addition, the author apologizes to her fans, by not revealing the identity of Candy's current partner so as not to break her dreams. Among the clues that reveal her identity is the word 「あ の ひ と」 / & # 34; Anohito & # 34; which in Japanese is used as a feminine and/or masculine third person pronoun, he/she, as well as to speak between two people of someone absent or distant, however known to both so it is easy to assume that it is one of the characters of the story.
In 2015, the Italian publisher Kappalab obtained the copyright to publish CCFS in its entirety in Italian. The first volume was published in early 2015 and was called "Candy Candy Romanzo". The second volume has been released in June 2015 and is titled "Candy Candy Lettere".
The mystery of 「あのひと」/ Anohito/Him
One of the characteristics of Final Story, is that the name of "that man", Candy's husband, is never revealed. However, the main clues that the author leaves us about the mysterious character are the following:
- He buys a paint on a flea market in London from the Pony Home, which gives Candy. However he chooses in which part of the room to place it so that it is appreciated from any angle of the room.
- Candy has gone to live in a place with an ocean through which he can't go to help Pony's home because "he" doesn't want to separate from it.
- Candy dreams of Anthony and confesses to him that he is happy to live with whom he loves.
- The first time Candy tells her return as a brat, he laughs and then gets serious and embraces her.
- He obsessesses Candy a mother-of-pearl jeweler passing from generation to generation in his family.
- He repairs the box of Stear's happiness.
- He surprises her sadly by the memories and asks her with sweet voice that makes dark as she lights the light, Candy sees him in front of the door with the smile that he so much likes and with the heart beating fast runs to his open arms and welcomes him.
- Candy lives with him on the banks of the Avon River. In a house surrounded by daffodils and roses growing in the garden.
- In a bookcase are the complete works of Shakespeare, books of medicine and French and English literature.
- The Japanese pronoun anohito (◀, 'anohito'?) expresses the idea "That person we both know", so when Candy uses it to point to her husband indirectly, she points out that it is a male character to whom readers already know.
Illustration Books
There are two volumes of picture books that were published in 1977/78, with illustrations by Yumiko Igarashi and poems by Kioko Mizuki. There are also others that were given away as appendices at the time the monthly Nakayoshi magazine was published. In 1992 the authors meet again and create a series of 3 children's books, where Candy's secret adventures are told when she still lived in the Pony Home, with stories by Kioko Mizuki and illustrations by Yumiko Igarashi.

Differences between manga and anime
The manga was published in 9 releases and the anime consists of 115 episodes.
Candy's age is different for various events, for example when she grows up in Pony's home.
The character of Clint the raccoon or albino coati belongs only to the anime version.
In the manga Patty tries to commit suicide because of Stear's death and in the anime that doesn't happen.
Annie in the manga is blonde and in the anime she has dark hair.
Terry gives Candy his first kiss during the May festival in the manga, however in the anime it happens on a Scottish holiday.
Once Candy and Terry break up, Terry turns to drinking and quits his position with the Stradford theater company. In the manga, Candy receives a gift from Albert (who had disappeared) from a town called Rockstown, when Candy arrives there looking for Albert she finds Terry performing in a traveling theater show. Candy doesn't get to talk to Terry but Terry thinks she saw his face in the audience even though she thinks it was her imagination. In the anime, Terry is drunk picking a fight at a bar where he meets Albert. This makes him reconsider and shows Candy from afar working as a nurse at the "Happy Clinic".
