The holiday was formally established in 1867 and originally called Dominion Day since that was Canada's legal designation as part of the British Empire. The name was changed to Canada Day in October 1982. The day is often celebrated with parades and outdoor parties. Every year in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa there are huge celebrations on the lawns of the national parliament buildings. Also, in other cities like Montreal and Toronto there are some of the biggest parades in the country.

Quebec

On this same day, in the province of Quebec, "Moving Day" takes place, where a large number of people move from one home or city to another, at the end of their annual rental contracts on June 30.
