Calvarrasa de Abajo is a Spanish municipality and town in the province of Salamanca, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is integrated within the region of Campo de Salamanca (Campo Charro). It belongs to the judicial district of Salamanca.

Its municipal area is made up of the towns of Amatos, Calvarrasa de Abajo, El Salinar, Los Arenales and Valdecarretas, as well as the unpopulated area of La Cabezuela, it occupies a total area of 28.16 km² and according to the demographic data collected In the municipal register prepared by the INE in 2017, it has a population of 1,152 inhabitants.

Climate

According to the Koppen climate classification, the climate of Calvarrasa de Abajo is cold semi-arid (BSk), very close to the limit with the Mediterranean oceanic climate (Csb) and to a lesser extent with the Mediterranean climate (Csa).

History

Founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, Calvarrasa de Abajo was included in the Peña del Rey quarter of the jurisdiction of Salamanca, within the Kingdom of León, then called Calvarrasa Danaya. With the creation of the current provinces in 1833, Calvarrasa de Abajo was included in the province of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region.

Monuments and places of interest

Church of Saint Peter.

The Parish Church of San Pedro stands out, built at the end of the XVI century, beginning of the XVII, Romanesque style.

On Friday, June 7, 2012, Plaza Sálvame was inaugurated as a tribute to the Telecinco television program Sálvame. The location of this square is located at the back of the Church.
