The Calatrava Camp Real.

Geomorphologically, it is a region characterized by its hills of volcanic origin and its lagoons.

The story of this region is related to that of the Order of Calatrava that was based in Almagro and its strength was the castle of Calatrava la Nueva. Its origin is in one of the most waric and decisive stages of the low Middle Ages for the Unit of Castile, linked to the foundation of the aforementioned homonymous military order, whose entrustment was the surveillance and protection of the South-Southwest avant-garde of the Plateau of the Islamic runs, as the first containment front of Castilla and Toledo, its main capital, beyond the depression of the Tagus, next to the Ribera del Guadiana.

Historically, Campo de Calatrava occupied the domains of the Order of Calatrava in La Mancha, which represented a large portion of the center of the current province of Ciudad Real. According to the historian Ricardo Izquierdo Benito et al. (2002): "The Calatrava field was the central nucleus of the domain of this Order. It extended from Puerto del Muradal, that is, the current Despeñaperros pass in Sierra Morena, to Puerto de Orgaz, or Los Yébenes, in the Montes de Toledo. To the west, the Calatravian domains reached Chillón, Valdemanco and Navas de Estena, sharing terms with the Archbishopric of Toledo and later with the town hall of this same city in the Montes de Toledo, at the height of the port of Milagro. To the east, they reached the borders with the domains of the other Orders of San Juan and Santiago, as determined by various agreements approved already in the 13th century, when the border was moved to Andalusian lands after the Battle of the Navas de Tolosa.".
