Broly (ブロリー Burorī?) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball franchise. There are two versions of the character: the first made his debut in a trilogy of Dragon Ball Z films released in the 90s, Moetsukiro!! Nessen - Ressen - Chōgekisen (1993), Kiken na futari! Super senshi wa nemurenai (1994) and Super senshi gekiha!! Katsu no wa ore da (1994); and the second is a reinterpretation created by Akira Toriyama himself who starred in the film Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018). His appearance in this latest feature film has caused Broly to be considered part of the canon universe of Dragon Ball.

Both versions of the character share certain elements as far as their history is concerned. Broly is a Saiyan who possesses gigantic and uncontrollable power, which manifests itself in all its magnitude when he becomes the Legendary Super Saiyan. Even when he was just a baby his power level reached immense figures that caused amazement and concern among those of his race. Paragus, his father, who holds a strong grudge against King Vegeta and the Saiyans for attempting the life of his son, trained Broly from his childhood to carry out his desire for revenge.

Creation and design

Broly was created by Toei Animation screenwriter Takao Koyama (who was in charge of his story, personality and the entire narrative behind the character and also wrote the first two films in which he appears), while his design along with all his transformations were carried out by Akira Toriyama.

Following the trend of the Saiyan race name being puns on vegetables, Broly is a pun based on the word broccoli, while his father's name, Paragus, is a pun on the word broccoli. word asparagus

Like all pure-blood Saiyans, he has black eyes, jet black hair that never grows, and to one point he had a tail. His hairstyle is a little messy and reaches the middle of his back. In the Toei version he wears a headband that controls his mind and the canon version wears a necklace that gives electric shocks. In the reworked version she is shown with scars on her face and body and a darker complexion. Broly is noticeably bulkier and taller than Goku and other characters. In the reworked version he is shown wearing traditional Saiyan armor, although it was later revealed that he was related to Frieza's Army, while in both versions he also wears a blanket around his waist.

In a 2003 interview with Akira Toriyama published in the American magazine Viz Shonen Jump, Toriyama said he did not know Broly, asking who he was and doubting whether he was in the manga when they made reference to the character for a sketch. In 2017, during the pre-development period of the twentieth Dragon Ball film, an editor of Toriyama suggested that he introduce Broly in the feature film, Toriyama took that recommendation and after watching the three films of the character, created a new version of Broly different from the one seen in the Dragon Ball Z movies and with a story that connects with Dragon Ball Super. Toriyama alleged in a statement released on the film's official site in July 2018 that since he had nothing to do with the anime at the time, he had completely forgotten the existence of the character and his story.

Personality

Broly is described as a Saiyan with a pure heart, however his father Paragus always blamed the Vegeta King for his exile, so Broly also harbored some resentment towards the royal family; Broly is a kind man but he has a special transformation with which he is able to release the power of an Ozaru, the problem is that he also releases his savagery, so that Broly will become a ruthless being while he is transformed.

Broly's personality in the classic films is completely different from his canonical version, perhaps marked by his tragic past or by his uncontrolled power. He is very similar to that of a psychopath, showing excessive and uncontrollable rage, which makes him It leads to the desire to destroy without control and to crush one's enemies ruthlessly. Broly tends to play with his opponents and enjoys the suffering of others in a sadistic way. He also appears cold and rarely fears his opponents. In his first appearance Broly shows some consciousness, even joking sarcastically and humiliating his enemies, but in the second film, and perhaps due to the ravages of his first battle with Goku or the comatose state from which he emerged, Broly seems completely possessed and unable to articulate any word other than "Kakarot".

Biography

Childhood

Broly is the son of a low-class Saiyan named Paragus. At birth, Broly was placed in a crib next to Son Goku, who had been born that same day. For some strange reason, Kakarot's cries caused Broly a series of disorders, of apparent rejection or annoyance, which involuntarily increased his power level, reaching 10,000 units. King Vegeta, fearing that his strength would grow even more when Broly grew up and rebelled against him, orders Paragus and Broly executed. Believing them dead, he abandons them, dumping their bodies in a garbage dump on Planet Vegeta.

The destruction of Planet Vegeta at the hands of Frieza caused the annihilation of almost the entire Saiyan race and the dispersal of the survivors throughout the universe. Precisely, Broly was one of them, and even being just a baby he was able to save his father and take him to another planet acting unconsciously. He was taking care of him and raising him, trying to contain the immense latent power inside him, which even allowed him to become a Super Saiyan from a very young age. But it was useless: once he grew up, Broly was uncontrollable, his strength was far superior to that of his father and he dedicated himself to destroying as many planets as he found in his path.

Southern Galaxy (The duel breaks out, The invincible power)

After the destruction of Frieza and Cooler, Paragus devised a plan that would take the Saiyans of planet Earth to New Vegeta: call Vegeta (who would eventually be accompanied by all the other Z warriors) to hold the title of king of the Saiyans and recover the splendor of the race under the pretext that there was a powerful space warrior that he had to eliminate first. After achieving this, he would keep them entertained looking for that warrior until the gumori comet collided with the planet, killing them instantly. But things were not going to turn out as he had planned: Once there, in the presence of Goku, Broly explodes, unleashing all his power and making his father's efforts to stop him useless (his power increases uncontrollably and unlimitedly; although he can use the power that he sees necessary, a serious mistake he commits in New Vegeta and on Earth), canceling for the first time the inhibited power of the diadem and losing all awareness of himself. With his power in the Legendary Super Saiyan state, Broly killed his father by throwing him into the gumori comet while he was trying to abandon him in a space capsule and was able to leave Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Piccolo and Gohan dying without even having a wound.. His power was so superior that it seemed that everything was lost. Fortunately for the Saiyans, Goku managed to gather all the power of his dying companions, and his own, into a single, accurate fist that apparently ended Broly's life.

Journey to Earth (The Return of Broly)

However, due to his immense power he survived the blow. Badly injured, he climbed aboard a damaged Saiyan capsule, traveling aimlessly until he accidentally collided with Earth, forming a lake that would later freeze along with the powerful warrior. Seven years passed in which nothing disturbed his lethargy, until he finally woke up when he heard the screams and cries of Son Goten, which he instantly identified with those of Goku. Upon waking up he defeats Videl. This caused the immediate awakening of Broly's power, whose powers seem to have increased much more due to the Saiyan trait of increasing his power after recovering from a battle (ZENKAI POWER). This one, in a super Saiyan state, was playing with Trunks and Son Goten, whose attacks were useless against his power. Only the appearance of Gohan, converted into Super Saiyan phase 2, could minimally entertain Broly already in the Legendary Super Saiyan state, which would last a few minutes. Gohan noted that his brutal combat had released a stream of lava and caused Broly to become trapped in it. At this moment Gohan is unconscious but before falling into the lava, Krillin, dressed in Piccolo's suit, saves his life. Apparently defeated, Broly would reappear, to the perplexity of Krillin and Son Gohan. Broly, ready to end the fight, launched his Omega Blaster, which if it had hit the Earth, would have destroyed it. However, both Gohan and Goten prepared to stop her by launching their Kame Hame Ha to repel the attack, which was not enough. Broly's Omega Blaster was gaining ground and the Earth was in danger. It was then when, thanks to the help of Shen Long, Goku appeared, transformed into a Full Power Super Saiyan to help his children. But not even one Oyako Kame Hame Ha of the three was enough to overcome Broly's power. Fortune once again allied itself with the Saiyans, who received unexpected help from Trunks, who was dying. In a last effort before fainting, the young Saiyan descendant of Vegeta launched a small ball of energy that distracted Broly. It was at that precise moment when Goku, Gohan, Goten and the power of the dragon Shen Long (Goten had asked to get rid of Broly) managed to defeat Broly, who created a barrier that helped him get rid of the attack, but the momentum of the attack carried him to the Sun itself. On this occasion Broly would die definitively, but the cells of his blood that were in the ship in which he had arrived to Earth would later be used by a swindler magician from a nearby village to create a new and terrible being: Bio-Broly.

Bio-Broly (The Ultimate Fight)

Bio-Broly, is originated by genetic and cellular engineering from the cells found in a sample of his blood in his ship, upon detecting Goten's presence again, he tried to get out of his diving suit in which he was was before being cloned 100%, leading to an error in the cloning process and as a consequence, a being that was half Broly, half viscous organic tissue, this happened when the liquid in which he was found adhered to his skin and caused a mutation. This being would noticeably lose abilities such as a loss of speed and intelligence (although Broly was never intelligent, much less as a legendary Super Saiyan), he is much less powerful than the original Broly and is somewhat unstable. However, he can regenerate and every time he is damaged he recovers more powerful than before, and is practically invulnerable to most attacks (Krillin tore off his head with his destruction disk, and it stuck back on). Despite this, he has a weak point: salt water. Curiously, he was defeated by the salt water, he was solidified upon contact with the salt water due to his organic constitution, a purple substance that emerged from his capsule after he left it and with a triple Kame Hame Ha performed in unison by Trunks, Krillin and Son Goten the intelligence of little Trunks: Bio-Broly, broke and died forever. Broly is last mentioned in the series and in the movies when after Bio-Broly was destroyed, in the afterlife, Bubbles tells him that Broly was causing a ruckus in hell, and that Kaiosama wanted Goku and Paikuhan to take care of it. of the.

In 2017, he was again the main antagonist of the 4D movie attraction Dragon Ball Z: Super Budokai Tenkaichi (2017) at Universal Studios Japan, where he assumes a form similar to that of Super Saiyan God called 'Broly God'. 3. 4;.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

It is revealed that Broly would have his first canonical appearance in this film, since Akira Toriyama, despite having designed Broly, did not remember his three films, since at that time he was not too involved with the anime. Due to the enormous popularity that the character received not only in Japan, but in the West, an editor at Toriyama suggested including Broly in the film based on the character to reorganize it. To do so, Toriyama watched the three Broly movies again, at the recommendation of his editor, and took into account the original facet of the character to please his old fans, but at the same time updated him and added a new image to unite him with the Dragon Ball Super story.

Transformations

Natural Forms

  • Broly (Base): This is the normal form of Broly. Broly was born on planet Vegeta the same day as Goku. Remember that the crying of Goku in the neighboring incubator was terribly uncomfortable, leaving behind a strong resentment towards Goku. In addition, seeing King Vegeta as a threat the tremendous power of little Broly, ordered his father to kill him, which caused Broly to resentment also to the royal family. As Broly's tremendous destructive power and brutal nature were too dangerous, his father, Paragus, coupled a diadem to his head that allowed him to control him. This made Broly a quiet and inexpressive teenager. However, by waking up his memories due to a casual encounter with Goku, his powers were released, once again escaping all control.
  • Broly (Super Saiyajin Restricted): A casual encounter with Goku awakens Broly's repressed memories and his powers resurface with tremendous strength. The diadem of your head usually controls Broly's brutal nature, causing your hair to be blue instead of the typical blonde hair of a Super Saiyajin. While remaining in the restricted state shows an incredible strength, rejecting even Vegeta's most fierce attacks.
  • Broly (Super Saiyajin Super Restricted): This stage was seen for a brief moment when Broly, being in a restricted state, tries to transform and a blue aura comes out and his eyes are blank.
  • Broly (Super Saiyajin): In this way he was only seen in the second film, in which he comes to face Goten and Trunks selling them without problems. He also clashes against Gohan (base) both are emptied until Broly passes to the Legendary State.
  • Broly (Super Legendary Saiyajin): This state is much higher than the level reached by most other Super Saiyajines. In fact the power of the legendary super saiyajin is infinite, but it depends on how much saiyajin can control. Its extreme power is due to the fact that resistance and speed is much higher, acquiring immunity from different physical and energy attacks and high temperatures. Musculature is excessive in this state, overtaken as Super Saiyajin Dai Ni Dankai, but speed is not affected. An outstanding feature is that to compensate for increased muscle mass, Broly even doubles its original height, something that does not happen with Super Saiyajin Dai Ni Dankai or the Ultra Super Saiyajin. The eyes remain blank, this becomes a similarity with the moment that Goku is blinded by rabies during his first transformation in Super Saiyajin. Also the time of transformation seems to be unlimited due to the amount of energy accumulated and tiredness is somewhat unlikely for the user. Another difference between the state and those of a Saiyajin is that the aura is green tone; the scalp that Broly shows when it is transformed is green also, which is not explained is whether the color varies with each Saiyajin or is unique to the Legendary Super Saiyajin. In addition, using this transformation the user makes a kind of skin change by removing the old one and changing it by a larger musculature and size. However, it is a poor transformation in the way the energy accumulates; in a normal Super Saiyajin the accumulation of energy is liberated by the aura that envelops them and in this legendary state the aura does not release as much energy as it is accumulated, causing a system of liberation by constant exercise or explosions of ki emanated by the body of the user of this transformation. In addition, irritability removes the reasoning by making an obsession focused on what aroused the first anger boost in this saiyajin (the example is shown in Broly's hatred for Goku, being the latter the one that provoked the awakening of the legendary warrior). It seems this state is static since Broly did not access other transformations although he managed to increase the power of transformation as shown in the films. The state can be controlled by a mental device like the one that built Broly's father (Paragus) that helps to contain anger, but Broly by reaching this transformation broke the device. The strength is much greater in the second film. In his first film, he proved to be superior to Goku and Gohan in Super Saiyajin full power (not even a Kame Hame Ha of Goku affected him) which shows that it can be equal or superior to Cell super Perfect and Gohan Super Saiyajin 2.y in his second film matched or exceeded Goku SSJ3.
  • Broly (Super Saiyajin 3 Legendary): This form has been seen in Dragon Ball video games (DBZ Dragon Battlers, DBZ Raging Blast 1 and 2, and in the arcade Dragon Ball Heroes). Its appearance is similar to when it is in its Legendary Super Saiyajin state, but now it has much longer hair and no eyebrows like the Super Saiyajin 3. This state is far superior to the level of Legendary Super Saiyajin and is even more powerful than a normal Super Saiyajin 3. His story says he unleashed all his rage for Goku, Gohan and Goten and for his desire to remove Kakarotto to achieve this great power, as he cannot avoid his rivalry to Son Goku. It is believed that Broly does not suffer energy wear when it is in this form of Super Saiyajin 3, as it is due to the amount of energy accumulated and tiredness is unlikely for the user.
  • Broly (Ozaru Dorado): This shape has been seen in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. It's Broly in his state of Super Ozaru Golden. It is physically differentiated from the other Golden Ozarus (Goku GT and Vegeta GT) in that its fur instead of being golden becomes emerald, it retains the clothes it has before the transformation and hair of its head is similar to when it is in Super Saiyajin state. In this state, Broly is stronger than in its form of Legendary Super Saiyajin 3 and than the Golden Ozaru forms of Goku GT and Vegeta GT.
  • Broly (Super Saiyajin 4 Legendary): This shape has been seen in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. Its appearance is a combination of the characteristics of the Legendary Super Saiyajin (height, white eyes without pupil and muscles) with those of Super Saiyajin 4 (intense red hair, marked eyes and tail). Somehow, Broly may have gone through the Ozaru level and then became Golden Ozaru to later become Super Saiyajin 4, but it is unknown how he could control his form of Golden Ozaru. This state is much more powerful than the Legendary Super Saiyajin 3. In its form of Super Saiyajin 4 Legendary, Broly can easily defeat Gotenks Adult of GT in Super Saiyajin 3, Vegeta GT in Super Saiyajin 4 and Goku GT in Super Saiyajin 4. It is believed that Broly does not suffer energy wear when it is in this form of Super Saiyajin 4, as it is due to the amount of energy accumulated and tiredness is unlikely for the user. The only warrior who could fight equally with this form of Broly is Gogeta in Super Saiyajin 4.
  • Broly (Super Saiyajin 4 Legendary Maximum Power): This form has been seen in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. Its appearance is similar to that of Super Saiyajin 4 legendary, but with the most toned muscles and a scar on the chest (signs that it has greatly increased its power and that it is more enraged than before). This state is much more powerful than the Legendary Super Saiyajin 4. It is believed that Broly does not suffer energy wear when it is in this form of Super Saiyajin 4 Maximum Power, as it is due to the amount of energy accumulated and tiredness is unlikely for the user. The only warrior who would defeat Broly in this form is Gogeta (in Super Saiyajin 4).

After being controlled by Babidi

  • Majin Broly (Super Legendary Saiyajin): This form has been seen in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. It is Broly in his state of Legendary Super Saiyajin controlled by Babidi. Its appearance is similar to that of the Legendary Super Saiyajin, but it has an M in the forehead, white eyes and more toned muscle mass (signs that it is controlled by Babidi). He's one of the Kings of Destruction. Hakaio).
  • Majin Broly (Super Saiyajin 3 Legendary): This form has been seen in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. It is Broly in his state of Super Saiyajin 3 Legendary controlled by Babidi. Its appearance is similar to that of Super Saiyajin 3 Legendary, but it has an M in the forehead, white eyes and more toned muscle mass (signs that it is controlled by Babidi). He's one of the Kings of Destruction. Hakaio).

After being controlled by Demigra

  • Broly Dark (Super Legendary Saiyajin): This form has been seen in the video game Dragon Ball Xenoverse. It's Broly in his state of Legendary Super Saiyajin controlled by Demigra. Its appearance is similar to that of the Legendary Super Saiyajin, but its body takes a purple tone and it leaves its eyes red and 2 dark lines in the face below the eyes. It's a little more powerful than the normal version of the Legendary Super Saiyajin.

After being controlled by Towa and Mira

  • Broly Supervillain (Super Legendary Saiyajin): This form has been seen in the video game Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. It is Broly in his state of Legendary Super Saiyajin controlled by the Time Destroyers: Towa and Mira. Its appearance is similar to that of the Legendary Super Saiyajin, but its body takes a purple tone and leaves its violet eyes and the symbol of the Time Destroyers on its forehead. It's a little more powerful than the normal version of the Legendary Super Saiyajin.

Powers and weapons

  • Its main weapon is its extraordinary strength, even capable of rivaling the power of Super Saiyajin 2. In addition, their energy rays are devastating, but because of their offending in the state of super saiyajin, it is not able to develop techniques as effective as the Kame Hame Hame or the Flash Final. The only thing developed is his shield of energy.
