Brendan Eich is an American programmer known for inventing the JavaScript programming language, as well as the Brave browser.

Biography

Brendan Eich received his BS in mathematics and computer science from Santa Clara University. He received his master's degree in 1986 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Eich began his career at Silicon Graphics, working for seven years on the operating system and network code. He then worked for three years at MicroUnity Systems Engineering writing the microkernel and DSP code, and making the first port of GCC for the MIPS R4000.

After working at Silicon Graphics, he went through several companies until he came to Netscape Communications Corporation in April 1995, working on the development of the JavaScript language (originally called Mocha, later called LiveScript) for the Netscape Navigator web browser. In early 1998 he helped found the Mozilla Foundation, serving as its chief architect. When AOL shut down the Netscape browser unit in July 2003, Eich helped turn the Mozilla Foundation around.

On March 24, 2014, Eich was promoted to CEO of Mozilla Corporation. Gary Kovacs, John Lilly, and Ellen Siminoff resigned from Mozilla's board of directors over the election, expressing disagreement with Eich's strategy and his desire to of having a CEO with experience in the mobile industry. Some employees of the Mozilla Foundation (an organization separate from the Corporation) tweeted that he should resign, referencing Eich's donations of US$1,000 to Prop 8 of California, which prohibited same-sex marriage, before it was repealed in 2013, when it was declared unconstitutional and marriages could resume. Eich stood by his decision to finance the campaign, but wrote on his blog that he was sorry he "caused harm" and pledged to promote equality on Mozilla. Online dating site OkCupid automatically played a message to Firefox users with information about Eich's donation and suggested they use another browser (although it allowed them to continue with Firefox if they so desired). On April 3, 2014, Eich resigned as CEO of Mozilla and left the organization, citing his inability to "be an effective leader under the present circumstances". 2015 is the CEO of Brave (web browser).
