Brachyelytrum is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family. It is native to North America, Japan, and Korea. It is the only genus in the tribe Brachyelytreae.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Ambroise Marie François Joseph Palisot de Beauvois and published in Essai d'une Nouvelle Agrostographie 39, 155, pl. 9, f. 2. 1812. The type species is: Brachyelytrum erectum (Schreb.) P.Beauv.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x =11, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 22. 2 ploid.

Etymology

Brachyelytrum: generic name derived from the Greek brachus (short) and elutron (cover, shell), alluding to its short glumes.
