Botswana is a presidential republic with a representative democracy within a multi-party system. All citizens over the age of 18 can vote. The executive power is exerced by the government. Legislative power is shared between the Botswana government and parliament. The judiciary is independent of the other powers.

On the other hand, the president is the head of state and government. Parliament is divided into the Botswana House of Chiefs - the upper house - and the Botswana National Assembly - the lower house - dominated since independence by the Botswana Democratic Party.
