Boniface I (Rome, c. 370 – September 4, 422) was the 42nd pope of the Catholic Church between 418 and 422.

He was elected on December 29, 418 when he was an old man and very sick.

At the same time, a group of deacons who had been dissatisfied with Pope Zosimus since the time, elected Eulalio who installed himself in the Lateran palace as antipope.

Eventually the Emperor Flavius Honorius resolved the issue in favor of Boniface I, who remained the legitimate pope. With this action, the church gives its consent to the intervention of the civil authority in ecclesiastical matters.

He supported Augustine of Hippo and the African bishops in their campaign against Pelagianism.

He died on September 4, 422.
