Tourist places
There are many places of interest in Birkirkara, including the location of the old railway, now a public garden. The train was used as a means of transportation until 1931. As a tourist attraction, the city includes the aqueducts near Miehel, and the Basilica of St. Helen, one of the most beautiful churches in the country, which also has the largest bell in Malt. In this city there are also two autonomous parishes: St. Helen and St. Mary, and one of the most famous schools in Malta, the College of St. Aloysius.
Events and customs
The main religious event in the city is the feast of St. Helen, which the Maltese celebrate on August 18, or by transfer on the first Sunday after this date. The central event of the celebration is a morning procession, which leaves the basilica at exactly 8:00 a.m., and returns around 10:45 a.m. The statue used is carried on the shoulders of the faithful and paraded through the main streets of the city.
Sports
The town is known for its football club, active since the 1950s. Despite its many brilliant players, the team has only managed to win the league three times in recent years. The club is called Birkirkara FC and competes in the Maltese League and the Maltese Cup.
