BirdLife International is an international organization dedicated to the protection of birds and their habitats. It is a federation of democratic and independent associations whose objective is the conservation and study of birds.. Currently BirdLife International's global network has representatives in more than 100 countries.

BirdLife International was founded in 1922 by Gilbert Pearson and Jean Théodore Delacour under the name International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP). It was a pressure group that fell into disuse after the Second World War. It returned to activity in 1983 with the appointment of a professional director and changed its name in 1993 to the current BirdLife International.

According to a delegate of the Spanish Society of Ornithology (SEO/Birdlife), in that country "the delimitation of areas of importance for birds made by this entity serves as a reference for the European Commission", so actions such as For example, the "discontinuation of a Zepa without the consent of Birdlife is almost impossible."

History

Birdlife International was founded in 1922 by the American ornithologist Thomas Gilbert Pearson and the Frenchman Jean Théodore Delacour under the name ICBP (International Council for Bird Preservation). This lobby group fell into disuse after the Second World War. It resumed its activity in 1983 with the appointment of a professional director, and changed its name in 1993 to its current name.

Between 2003 and 2006, Birdlife International actively promoted the idea that migratory birds were not the cause of the spread of avian flu, but that the poultry industry could be the source of the problem and its spread, a possibility that FAO officially recognized it on May 22, 2006.
