Bionimy is, within onomastics, the branch that deals with the study of the names of living beings. The branch that concerns their scientific names is in Taxonomy.

Frequently a difference is made between:

  • Zoonimia, or part of the bionimia referring to animal names.
  • Fitonimia, or part of the bionimia referring to plant names.
  • In Anatomy a biotoponym is a name of a region of the body, and as it is distinguished from a name of an organ.
  • In Biology a biotoponym is a biological name of a plant.
