Woman with Bingo cards.

The bingo (from English bingo) is a game of chance that consists of a drum with a certain number of numbered balls inside. Players play cards with random numbers written on them, within the corresponding range. An announcer is taking balls out of the bass drum, announcing the numbers out loud. If a player has that number on his card, he crosses it off, and the game continues like this until someone manages to mark all the numbers on his card.

There are several theories about when this activity began, but most of them date it back to the 16th century. It is a very popular game all over the world of which there are two typical varieties, which are the 90-ball game and the 75-ball game.

History of Bingo

Some theories date the origin of this popular game of chance back to the time of Roman culture. Others relate it to ancient Italy in the XVI century, but what is really certain is that it constitutes one of the first forms of gambling popular.

The known history of this game (not accepted by all historians) dates back to the time of the barbarians and the potentates who collected the famous taxes from different villages, towns, among other classes of society in remote times.

The game in general consisted of integrating in a container several balls with numbers that represented different villages of the different powers and based on the hits the knights and soldiers made the collections of gold, silver, minerals, jewels and others objects of value as compensation and retribution for their luck in being chosen, on several occasions the values acquired were for the use of constructions and on other occasions they used them to feed large masses of armies and among others to combat conflicts and conquests.

Over the years and due to new norms associated with society and laws promulgated by great potentates such as the Romans, these games that were previously used to collect money and wealth began to be used to provide fun to the different visitors and explorers of the world in search of business and based on this the ideas that were created were based on providing fun with games, dances, women and prestigious classes with other disciplines such as dice, cards, and other games that now amuse millions of players and passionate bettors in the world.

In contrast, numerous historians and specialists affirm that the origin of this custom is the Italian lottery, when the kingdoms of Italy were united in 1530. The widely accepted hypothesis affirms that the predecessor of the popular game is “Il Giuoco del Lotto d`Italia”, a national lottery that was played weekly and has extended in time to the present date. Today, it is an essential component of the country's budget, generating more than $75 million in current revenue. "Il Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia" is played every Saturday in this country.

The operational closeness of both games is manifested in the elements involved in their development. In both cases, the organizer must have numbered balls, a bolillero or tombola and numbered cards. The social game of bingo seems to be an evolution of this game that has spread for centuries in the region of Italy.

In 1770, this game came to the attention of the French, who called it Le Lotto, and it was established with the rules that are still followed today. They were the first to play with bingo cards, chips and to call out the numbers. At this time, it was only played by the people of the high aristocracy. The prizes were not organized in the current way but were extended in numerous possibilities of recognition for winning. Different typical elements of the mentioned years constituted the prizes.

Bingo spread rapidly throughout Europe in the 1800s. Educational bingo games became popular. In 1850 a bingo game was designed in Germany to teach children the multiplication tables, in addition to other educational bingo games such as "spelling bingo", "animal bingo", "historical bingo". These bingos were designed to provide children ages 3-6 with a bit of fun while also teaching them to sing and recognize numbers.

After spreading throughout Europe the game began to be released in North America. At first the game became popular at village fairs and festivals. It consisted of an organizer taking numbered discs out of a cigar box while players marked the numbers on their cards by placing beans on them and shouting "beano" if they won.

During a visit to the Atlanta carnival in 1929, Edwin Lowe, a New York toy salesman, discovered the Beano. Lowe noted the great excitement the players were feeling. He tried to play a Beano game that same night, but couldn't get a seat. The players were very hooked, and when the man running Beano's game tried to shut down the stall, the players simply refused to stop playing. Finally, at 3 a.m., the story goes, the organizer made way for Lowe. Returning to New York, Lowe bought some beans, and all the other things necessary to make the game. He invited some friends over to his apartment to test his new game. Before he knew it, his friends were playing Beano with the same excitement and fervor as the ones he had seen at the carnival. During a game, Lowe studied the behavior of a player who was about to win. He just needed one more number to complete his card, but he got more and more nervous when he saw that his number didn't come up. Finally, when he managed to cover all the numbers from him, he shouted out of excitement: "B-B-B-BINGO!" instead of Beano. This is what explains his name today.

Once it became known in North America, it quickly spread to the rest of the world.

A priest from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is the man responsible for first introducing bingo as a fundraiser for the church. A member of the congregation suggested using the game in order to get money for maintenance. It was then that the original bingo game, which only offered 24 unique card variants, expanded. As more and more church members were taking part in the bingo game, more cards were given out. The priests soon realized that many players won the same game, so they looked for new ways to make the number combinations unique.

To do this, they enlisted the help of Lowe, who hired a Columbia University math professor named Carl Leffler to help him increase the number of combinations on the bingo cards. By 1930, Leffler had already created more than 6,000 bingo cards with unique combinations (it is said that after this Leffler went crazy).

This new form of bingo established the game as a way to raise funds. By 1934, there were already more than 10,000 weekly bingo halls in operation throughout North America. From churches to American Indian reservations, they were all bingo players spending $90 million weekly on bingo in North America alone.

In 1977 bingo was authorized in Spain. A new bingo system different from the one that prevailed at that time was invented: the 90-number bingo. In the 1980s there was a veritable “modern bingo” fever when slot machines and gaming halls entered the scene.

In 1992 there were 604 bingo halls in Spain, according to the first known official data. Today there are a variety of internet games.

Spanish legislation

National Rules Affecting Bingo

Gambling had been banned in Spain since 1922, so any type of game was only done in the private sphere or illegally.

After the end of the dictatorship and the transition to democracy, the idea of regulating and legalizing gambling began to be considered, for them a Royal-Decree was carried out, regulating criminal, administrative and fiscal aspects of the games of luck, bets or chance and bets. It is the so-called ROYAL DECREE-LAW 16/1977 of February 25. After the approval of this law, the first bingo halls began to emerge in Spain.

In addition, there are other laws at the national level that affect bingo halls in one way or another in competitions such as: Intellectual Property, Local Treasuries, Defense of Competition, Mercantile Legislation, Law on Companies, Tax on Economic Activities, Unfair Competition, Protection of Citizen Security, transfer of powers to the autonomous communities, Occupational Risks, Basic Building Regulations, Prohibited Files, etc.

Legislations of the different autonomous communities

Based on national regulations, each autonomous community draws up its own regulations that regulate the world of gambling in all its areas:

- Homologation.

- Transfers.

- Games and bets.

- Game catalogues.

- Prohibition of access.

- Gaming machines.

- Specific to bingo.

- Public shows.

- Organizational.

- Taxes.

How do you play bingo?

The bingo game consists of a drum with numbered balls, cards with printed random numbers and markers or chips to cross out or cover these. A game consists of extracting the balls from the bass drum at random and singing their respective numbering. The players, provided with cards, will cross out the number when it is called by the cashier (person who is in charge of extracting the balls). When completing a horizontal line on a card, the player must call "line" and will take a small percentage of the total collected from the sale of the cartons. When a player manages to cross out all the numbers on his card, he will have to shout & # 34; bingo & # 34; and will become the winner of the game, thus taking the highest percentage of the collection as a prize.

Elements

In the game of bingo, some essential elements are needed, such as a bolillero or bass drum, the balls or number balls, cardboard and a table space.

The ease with which a bingo game can be organized is one of the factors that has motivated the extension of this entertainment of chance.

Extracting machines

The bass drum, or bolillero, is made up of two transparent hemispherical domes that are highly resistant to blows, since they have to withstand the impact of the balls.

The domes are 50x50 cm. The way the bolillero rotates can vary, it can be moved by a handle, manually, or by means of an electric motor that makes it rotate.

Once one of the balls has been separated, say its number and continue mixing. If of the manual bolillero, while the separated bolilla is removed, the mixing stops. with the bolillero electric mixing never stops because the ball slides through a channel.

In both cases, after the number is announced, the players must mark the matches on all the bingo cards they own. This job can be overwhelming if you have more cards than you can handle, so we recommend playing with no more than three or four cards[by whom?]. The time between balls is very short.

Balls

Bingo balls have the following special characteristics:

Material: cellulose nitrate

Printed in 10 (ten) positions

Colours: black, blue, green, red and orange, white background

Diameter: 38.5mm (+/ 0.5mm)

Weight: 2.5g (+/ 0.5g)

Cartons

The cards are one of the fundamental pieces to be able to play Bingo. Said cards are made of suitable material to make it easier for them to be marked by the players, and they are valid exclusively for a single game. The cards belong to series that contain a number of not less than 96,000 different cards.

On the front of each card is the series to which it belongs, range of number of cards within each series assigned to the establishment, order number and number of cards that make up the series. On the back are the taxes to be paid, as well as an extract of the main rules of the game. Likewise, the warning that the division of the two cartons of the sales unit, as well as the marks or erasures that prevent the reading of the identifying elements of the cardboard, render it useless for prize purposes.

Manufacturing

The bingo cards are manufactured by the “Royal Casa de la Moneda. National Factory of Currency and Stamp”. Bingo Cards are printed in 4 colors and incorporate numbering. The printing (series) is carried out in coils, by an offset procedure, carrying out the numbering of the cartons at the same time. In each series, 1,944 bingo cards come out, this is due to the manufacturing process (54 sheets of 36 cards each), apart from this criterion of 1,944 cards, there is also that of 3,888 (multiple of 1944). These two criteria are used in all bingo halls.

The series are delivered in strips of 6 cartons arranged vertically and each strip consists of the 90 numbers involved in the game of bingo. Guides and emblems of recreational machines are produced at the request of the various autonomous communities, incorporating different security elements both in the support and in the printing. The concern is the security that the cartons cannot be counterfeited or tampered with. For this reason, the FNMT-RCM offers full security through the use of watermarked paper, invisible inks and other security elements, which allow any counterfeit to be distinguished instantly.

The cardboard is protected in such a way that any attempt to manipulate it will damage it irreparably. The cards vary in format depending on the type of bingo in which they are going to be used, so we have different characteristics depending on whether it is simultaneous bingo, online bingo, bingo games or classic bingo in hall.
