Bilz and Pap are the names of two Chilean soft drinks produced since the beginning of the 20th century by the Compañía de Cervecerías Unidas. Its appearance dates back to the beginning of the 20th century in Santiago de Chile, specifically to 1905, when Bilz, a grenadine-flavored soft drink, was launched on the market, and in 1927, Pap, a papaya-flavored soft drink, was born.

History

Notice of Bilz, produced by Cervecería Ebner (1908).

In 1905, Bilz, the oldest soft drink in Chile, was born, and in 1927 Papaya Rex, the forerunner of Pap. These two fruity flavors have been developed as a single brand since 1970, they are the leaders in the flavored beverage market.

Its appearance dates back to the beginning of the 20th century in Santiago de Chile, specifically to 1905, when Bilz, a grenadine-flavored soft drink, was released. It was inspired by a German concoction of the same name that was then produced by Ebner Bottler.

In 1916 Compañía de Cervecerías Unidas (CCU) acquired the Ebner company and Bilz entered the product portfolio of the largest bottling company in the country. In 1927 Papaya Rex Imitation was launched on the market, which in 1960 began to be called simply Pap. Its fruity flavor and aroma is inspired by the Chilean papaya (carica chilena), a fruit found exclusively in the Coquimbo region.

Although initially they were marketed separately, in 1970 both soft drinks became a set and obtained the name by which they are known to this day: Bilz and Pap. By then Bilz and Pap already had a guaranteed market since they were the oldest drinks in Chile and Latin America. Five years later, their final packaging is designed, which, due to its rapid acceptance by the public, took on the family format with great success.

In the same decade, CCU published a comic strip called "The Adventures of Don Bilz" in the children's magazine El Peneca. In this same period, the slogan "With Bilz and Pap a fantasy world" was born, valid until 1997, when Bily and Maik, Bilz and Pap's galactic mascots, appeared.

During the 80s both drinks began to stand out and were definitely positioned in the minds of Chileans. It was thanks to the advertising campaign that the phrase "The world of Bilz and Pap" was coined, when they enter the popular language.

In 2010, Bilz and Pap, entered the site of great brands "Marketing Hall Of Fame", a distinction of the highest level given to brands that have been successful over time and have contributed outstandingly to marketing with quality, innovation and management professionalism. Bilz y Pap is the fifth CCU brand to receive this important recognition. A year later, the product portfolio is expanded and three new fantasy flavors are launched under the name of Pop, such as Pop Morada in 2011, Pop Verde in mid-2012 and Pop Celeste in November 2012. They stopped selling in 2013 and in 2015 new Pop flavors were launched such as Candy Cherry, Cotton Candy and relaunching the purple flavor. In August 2016, the Orange flavor is launched.

In 2012, the brand decided to relaunch a limited edition of its 1905 bottles. For this, an advertising campaign inspired by the cartoons of the early 1900s was carried out, in addition to distributing the retro bottles. They stopped selling in October 2012.
