Bijū (尾獣, Tailed Beasts?) is the name used to refer to ten demons in the Naruto manga and anime. They are differentiated by the number of tails they have, which range from one to nine. Tailed beasts are living forms of chakra, sometimes referred to as Chakra Monsters (チャクラ のバケモノ, Chakura no Bakemono?), giving a ninja more power in battle. The chakra of the beasts are characterized by being red.

The immense strength that beasts possess is tempered by their bestial nature, which prevents them from being intelligent enough to use it effectively, thus when beasts are sealed within humans, they can benefit from knowledge of their users, giving them the ability to make better use of their powers. However, this has been proven to be false, tailed beasts are in fact intelligent individuals with their own personalities and emotions, and due to their power, they have been sought after by countless humans over the years, and were generally treated as mere instruments to be used, a sentiment they absolutely loathed. Furthermore, they are well aware of their origin and the state of the ninja world.

They also have the ability to communicate telepathically between themselves and their jinchūriki, and have different levels of consciousness. There is the initial level, in which the animal can appear in a species' habitat seemingly trapped, somehow, by whatever fūinjutsu sealed it away. The second level is where all tailed beasts can summon, free of restrictions. and communicate with each other. The jinchūriki can also enter there, but to do so, they must be fully connected to their demon.

Tailed beasts can also freely transfer their chakra to whomever they choose, and as Kurama pointed out, it's a less complicated process for them than it is for humans.

History

At the beginning of ninja history, centuries before the founding of the villages, there existed an entity known as the Ten-Tails, which attacked the land until the Sage of Six Paths defeated and sealed the beast within himself., becoming the first jinchūriki. However, knowing that his death would free the Ten-Tails, the sage used the creation of all things justu, to split his chakra into nine parts and create the nine tailed beasts, before using Chibaku Tensei (地爆天星, Chibaku Tensei? ) to seal his body in the moon. Time after he was created, the sage gave each of the young beasts a name and told them that they would always be together, even when they were apart. He also told them that one day they would become an entity again with a different name, as well as the forms they had at that time, when the time came for them to understand what true power was. Despite the close relationship between them, there is a lot of friction. One cause was due to Kurama's belief that his strength was determined by the number of tails.

At the time of the formation of the ninja villages, Hashirama Senju, the first Hokage, used the Wood Release to capture and deliver the various beasts to other villages as peace treaties, in order to balance power between them. each village. However, after Hashirama's death, the villages had trouble containing the beasts and began to run rampant, so the villages decided to seal the beasts within the humans. To ensure that the jinchūriki does not become a traitor, it has been common practice to choose one who is part of the family of the Kage of the village. The strength of the jinchūriki would be used to protect the village. Throughout history, very few people have gained full control of one of the beasts. Despite this, some have been able to use the power of beasts without becoming a true jinchūriki. The Gold and Silver Brothers became Kurama's pseudo-jinchūriki, having already been devoured by him, but managed to survive by consuming some of their own normally deadly flesh, tinging themselves with his chakra.

With the power of the Sharingan, Madara Uchiha was able to control the Nine-Tails and use it during his battle with Hashirama. During the fight, control of the beast was wrung out, and Madara pretended to be defeated in the Valley of the End. However, it is later revealed that he had in fact survived the fight and obtained Hashirama's DNA, his true purpose behind the fight. By integrating Hashirama's DNA into his wounds, Madara awakened the Rinnegan, just before the end of its natural life. Thanks to that, he was able to summon the Demon Statue of the Outer Path, the empty shell of the Ten-Tails.Living through the use of artificial means to expand his life, Madara was unable to carry out his plan to revive the Ten-Tails. devil. As such, he passed this goal on to Obito Uchiha, who began to share the same ideology after witnessing the death of his partner Rin.

With the help of Akatsuki, during the Fourth Ninja World War, seven of the nine tailed beasts were sealed into the statue. Later, all the beasts were sealed into their respective users, reincarnated as the Six Paths of Pain through Edo Tensei. Angered by the slow progress of the plan, Tobi, accompanied by the statue, entered the battlefield to obtain the crimson gourd and amber vessel containing the Gold and Silver Brothers. Although he did not seal Kurama and Gyuki completely, he only sealed them. possessed parts of its power, Tobi decided to start the plan when the statue undergoes a painful regeneration for the Ten-Tails. When Madara realized that the plan had started without two of the nine demons being extracted, he tried to fix this. situation. Despite Naruto and Killer Bee's attempt to destroy the statue while it was in the midst of transformation, it was successfully restored to the Ten-Tails, albeit incompletely.

Tailed Beasts

Shukaku

Shukaku Eye

Shukaku (守鶴, Shukaku?), also known as One-tailed beast (一尾の尾獣, Ichibi no Bijū?), or just One Tail (一 尾, Ichibi?), is the first tailed beast with the appearance of a Japanese raccoon, which belongs to the Hidden Sand Village. In the past it was sealed within two inhabitants of the Arena, and, later by order of the fourth Kazekage, it was sealed in the body of Gaara, his son, to be used as a weapon. Following Gaara's capture by Deidara and Sasori, members of Akatsuki, the demon was extracted, and was in the hands of the organization. Gaara was able to survive the extraction thanks to Chiyo who gave her his life energy to revive him, using the transmigration jutsu.

Currently Shukaku does not possess a jinchūriki, although in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Boruto, Shinki, Shikadai and company had to move it to the Leaf Village to avoid being captured by Urashiki Ōtsutsuki.

The demon has the ability to control the Wind Release (whereby it can use a technique that involves launching chakra-laced spheres from its mouth called the Tailed Beast Ball (尾獣玉, Bijūdama?)) and uses the art of magnetism to control the sand. Also, unlike other demons, he is capable of sucking the soul out of its wielder when the latter sleeps. Because of this, Gaara suffers from insomnia.Shukaku deeply hates Kurama because the fox bases his strength level based on the number of tails, so he considers Shukaku the weakest of all.

Shukaku is intelligent but inconsistent, with behavior similar to that of a drunk. He is also the most unstable among the demons seen so far. His name refers to his behavior as it reads similar to Shukaku (酒客, Shukaku?), which means “alcoholic”. He was voiced by Hiroshi Iwasaki.

Matatabi

Matatabi (又旅, Matatabi?), known as the Two-Tailed Beast (ニ尾 の尾獣, Nibi no Bijū?) or just Two Tails (ニ尾, Nibi?), is the second tailed beast with the appearance of a nekomata, belonging to the Hidden Cloud Village. It was previously sealed in Yugito Nii, but was captured by the Akatsuki and sealed in the demon statue, which in turn caused the death of its bearer Yugito Nii. Although she is later released after the division of the Ten Tails. However, Madara seals him along with the other demons again, but he returns to freedom just like the other demons after Kaguya's defeat by Naruto and Sasuke.

The demon can control the Fire Release, creating very powerful fireballs, and can also use the Tailed Beast Ball. Hidan reveals that the demon is also called Monster Cat (化け猫, Bakeneko?).

“Matatabi” is the name of Actinidia polygama, a type of catnip found in Japan. She is voiced by Ryōko Shiraishi.

Isobu

Isobu (磯撫, Isobu?), known as the Three-tailed Beast (三尾の 尾獣, Sanbi no Bijū?) or just Three Tails ((三尾, Sanbi?), is the third tailed beast with the appearance of a turtle, belonging to the Village Hidden in the Cloud In the past, he was sealed in the body of Yagura, the fourth Mizukage of the Mist. Afterwards, Isobu was forcibly sealed in Rin Nohara by a ninja from the aforementioned village with the goal of destroying the Leaf Village, but Rin was killed by Kakashi to prevent the disaster. In the anime, a boy named Yūkimaru is able to control him through some drugs that Kabuto provided.

Unlike the other demons, he did not possess his jinchūriki at the time of his capture and is therefore very similar to a wild animal in behavior. According to Deidara, in the absence of a user, the beast is weaker as it cannot use its powers to its fullest. He is captured by Akatsuki and sealed inside the demonic statue, along with the Four-Tails.In the anime Orochimaru with Kabuto and Guren, a ninja from the Hidden Sound Village, try to capture him without success. He is eventually captured by Deidara and Obito as it happens in the manga.

Isobu, despite its enormous size, has great speed. In the anime, he is able to control the Water Release, use a mist capable of creating illusions, create giant cannonballs of water from his mouth, giant waves through his roar, and finally the Tailed Beast Ball. in the anime, the demon has the ability to split into mini-clones. His name is an alternate reading of the kanji for Isonade, the name of a sea monster from Japanese mythology. He is voiced by Shigenori Sōya.

They are Goku

Son Goku (孫悟空, Son Goku? ), also known as the Four-Tailed Beast ( 四尾の尾獣, Yonbi no Bijū?) or just Four Tails (四尾, Yonbi?), is the fourth tailed beast with the appearance of a gorilla, belonging to to the Hidden Rock Village. Before being captured by the Akatsuki, he was sealed in the body of Roshi, an ancient traveler of the Rock and later sealed in the demonic statue with the Three-Tails.

The demon has the ability to control the Lava Release, which is the combination of Fire and Earth chakra types, and can also use the Tailed Beast Ball.

The beast is called Son Gokū Seiten Taisei (孫悟空斉天大聖, Son Goku Seiten Taisei? ) and Wise King of the Monkeys (仙猿の王, Sen'en no Ō?), two of Sun Wukong's titles, protagonist of the classic novel Journey to the West. The design of this demon is also inspired by the protagonist of Dragon Ball, Son Gokū, who, in turn, was inspired by the huge gorilla from the same novel, and his number of tails is reminiscent of the sphere that guarded the young Goku. His voice is played by Hiroki Yasumoto.

Kokuo

Kokuō (コク王, Kokuō?), also known as the Five-tailed Beast (五 尾の尾獣, Gobi no Bijū ?) or just Five Tails (五尾, Gobi ?), is the fifth tailed beast, with the appearance of a hybrid dolphin and a white horse, which belongs to the Hidden Rock Village. Before being captured by the Akatsuki and sealed in the demonic statue, he was sealed in the body of Han, a Rock ninja.

Kokuō is able to use the Boil Release as well as the Tailed Beast Ball. He is voiced by Mie Sonozaki.

Saiken

Saiken (犀犬, Saiken?) known as the Six-Tailed Beast (六尾の 尾獣, Rokubi no Bijū?) or simply Six Tails (六尾, Rokubi?), is the sixth tailed beast with the appearance of a slug, belonging to the Village Hidden in the Mist. Before being captured and sealed in the demonic statue by the Akatsuki, he was sealed in the body of Utakata, a Mist ninja.

In the anime, the demon appears to have the ability to absorb ninjutsu, while in the manga it is capable of secreting a powerful and highly corrosive alkaline solution. Like the other demons, he can use the Tailed Beast Ball. The demon's name derives from a Chinese mythological creature. He is voiced by Miyu Irino.

Chomei

Chōmei (重明, Chōmei ?), also known as the Beast with seven tails (七尾の尾獣, Nanabi no Bijū?) or simply Seven Tails (七尾, Nanabi, Shichibi?), is the seventh tailed beast with the appearance of an insect —in the time of the Sage of the Six Paths it resembled a larva—, which belongs to the Hidden Waterfall Village. Before being captured by the Akatsuki, he was sealed in the body of Fū, a ninja from the Waterfall.

He has bone armor covering his body and also produces fine dust with which he can blind opponents. Among the nine demons, Chōmei is the only one who can fly. Chōmei's name is probably derived from the Chinese mythological bird Chongming. His voice is played by Ken'ichi Suzumura.

Gyūki

Gyūki (牛鬼, Gyūki?), also known as the Eight-tailed Beast (八尾 の尾獣, Hachibi no Bijū?) or simply Ocho Colas 八尾 (Hachibi, 八尾?), is the eighth tailed beast with the appearance of a hybrid between an octopus and an ox, belonging to the Hidden Cloud Village. He was captured by the third Raikage within the amber vessel, one of the Sage of Six Paths' items. He has had several jinchūriki in the past, the latest of which is Killer Bee, the user current of the demon.

During Akatsuki's goal to capture the demon, Gyūki helps Bee escape from Sasuke and Kisame. Before the Fourth Ninja War begins, Gyūki and Bee are sent to Turtle Island, where they meet Naruto. When the young man decides to go to war, Bee accompanies him. In the confrontation with Obito and Madara, Gyūki and Bee witness Naruto's complete transformation into Kurama. Later, the demon is captured by Madara and sealed along with the other beasts, but returns to freedom after Kaguya's defeat by Naruto and Sasuke to later reunite with Bee again.

Unlike the other demons, he shares a much friendlier and more open relationship with his jinchūriki and claims that meeting Killer Bee has caused his evil instincts to disappear. The two get along well in combat, so much so that Gyūki transfers her own chakra to Bee, who is able to partially and fully transform into the demon.

The demon has the ability to produce ink, through which Bee uses ninjutsu, to create a huge vortex capable of erasing everything around it, —used against Tobi— and the Tailed Beast Ball. Despite his enormous size, he has great speed.Gyūki is inspired by a creature from Japanese mythology that bears his name and of which Mishimoto has only summarized some characteristics. In Japan, this figure is also called Ushi-oni—demon ox—and is traditionally depicted as a huge ox with four horns, one of which is broken, a chin spike also broken, and eight tails resembling the tentacles of a octopus, while its body is that of a spider and its head is that of an ox. He is voiced by Masaki Aizawa.

Kurama

Jūbi

Eye of the Jūbi

The Ten-Tailed Beast (十尾の尾獣 , Jūbi no Bijū ?) or just Ten Tails (十尾, Jūbi ?), is the tenth and last ancestral tailed beast, the unification of all beasts. It was originally a divine tree that it contained all the chakra in the world, which humans venerated through sacred rites. Every thousand years this tree produced a fruit that no human could touch. One day, a woman, Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, ate the fruit, becoming the first living being to possess the chakra. Later the woman, now eager for power, wanted to recover the chakra inherited from her two children and for this reason she merged with the sacred tree giving life to the demon, to later attack them. Kaguya's son, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, better known as the Sage of the Six Paths, helped by his brother Hamura Ōtsutsuki, managed to defeat her and seal her in his body, becoming the first jinchūriki. Dying, the Sage decided to split the demon's chakra into nine parts and, through a jutsu called Creation of All Things, gave birth to nine demons into which he infused all of their mother's chakra. Eventually, he sealed the body. soulless of the Ten-Tails with the Chibaku Tensei, trapping him in a huge mass of rocks, which would later be known as the Moon.

His body was returned to Earth by Madara and was renamed the Outer Path Demon Statue, and was used as a container for the extracted demons. During the Fourth Ninja War, Obito and Madara awaken him and, after causing numerous deaths, he was first absorbed by Obito, who becomes his new jinchūriki and transforms him back into the divine tree, and then by Madara, who also absorbs the tree. Later, Madara is betrayed by the Black Zetsu, who uses him for the purpose of reviving Kaguya. After the defeat of the latter at the hands of Naruto and Sasuke, the beasts return to freedom while the demonic statue is imprisoned in a new Chibaku Tensei, thus finally ending the threat of the Ten Tails.

Being the beast the fusion of all demons or more precisely its progenitor, it preserves in its being the very essence of the entire planet. Kurama points out that it is impossible to perceive the negativity of the monster, since it is not endowed with emotions or ideals, like the energy present in the air and on the earth; however, Naruto, upon entering sage mode, realizes that the Ten-Tails' power is immeasurable. Unlike the other demons, the Ten Tails is not a sentient being since his entire existence is linked to the fact of wanting to destroy everything and everyone to take revenge for the chakra that humans stole from him. Therefore, it is the only creature that needs a jinchūriki in order to unleash its immense and unlimited potential. In conclusion, sealing the Jūbi in a human body means that the Jūbi will evolve beyond human and become a god.
