The Books of the Bible were written by various characters in history, both in Hebrew in the Old Testament, and in Greek in the New Testament.

The Old Testament is composed as follows:

  • 39 books for Protestants, Anglicans, Restorationists, East Assyrians, Rabbi Jews and Caraite Jews (for these last two, traditionally presented in the form of 24 books).
  • 46 books for Catholics (or 49 if Chapter 6 of the Book of Baruc are separately counted, and Chapters 13 and 14 of the Book of Daniel).
  • 52 books for the Orthodox (or 55 if Chapter 6 of the Book of Baruc are separately counted, and Chapters 13 and 14 of the Book of Daniel).

The New Testament (which is not found in the Rabbinic and Karaite Jewish Writings) consists of 27 books for all groups of Christian denomination.

Thus, the total number of books of the Bible varies according to the canon:

  • The Canon Alexandrino, used by the early Christians, is a translation of the Hebrew into Greek, which included a series of books that were rejected from the canon of the Jewish Tanach, but were received by Christianity of the first centuries. In the Catholic Church these books are called "deuterocanonics". The Protestant Church calls them "apocryphs". The Eastern and Orthodox Christian Churches include in their Bibles four to eight texts in addition to these, and reject the Western custom of distinguishing them from the protocanians.
  • The Hebrew Canon is used by Judaism in general (including the Caraites and Messianics), and by Protestant, Anglican and Paraprotestant Christianity.

Books of the Old Testament

The original Hebrew text consisted of consonants only. The books of the Torah (as the Pentateuch is known to Jews) generally have names based on the first prominent word in each book. However, the names in Spanish are not translations from the Hebrew, but are based on the Greek names created by the translation called the Septuagint, based on the rabbinic names that describe the thematic content of each book.

These are the books of the Old Testament, arranged according to Western custom:
