Bespin is a fictional planet in the Star Wars universe. Appears in episodes V and VI (special edition).

Geography and inhabitants

In the middle of the Anoat sector, Bespin system, Outer Rim Ison Corridor, Bespin was a gaseous planet. Despite everything, composed mostly of Tibanna gas. Behind the 30 km diameter layer of oxygen lie other Tibanna and many other types of gases. The planet's core is a solid metal ball. It has many moons, including Drudonna and H'gaard.

Very few Bespin natives are known. There is animal life of all kinds: rawwk birds, microscopic algae that inhabit clouds, balloon-like beings called beldons, floating velkers, bats, flying fish, among others.

The chain is maintained by algae. When they associate, they unite in floating groves that secrete a gas called rethen. The gas keeps various beings floating. And the rest live in floating cities or in the groves themselves.

History

The first settlements on the planet were simple refineries. Then came the floating city of Tibannopolis. Subsequently, Tibannopolis fell out of favor.

Years passed until in the last century of the Galactic Republic, Baron Lord Ecclessis Figg arrived on Bespin and discovered something better than tibanna gas, a much more expensive and valuable variant. Compressed tibanna gas.

Figg founded Cloud City, a floating city with a cluster of refineries that pioneered gas extraction. Meanwhile, riders were fitted to the flying thrantan beings, as a gift from Figg to his wife. Over time only the lower part of Cloud City was relegated to gas freezing and storage. The upper part became a city with walkways, vehicles, casinos and luxury hotels.

During the Clone Wars, Bespin served at one point to host refugees, but the Confederacy extended its claws into and around Bespin.

During the Galactic Civil War it was Lando Calrissian who administered the City. Three years after the Battle of Yavin, the Empire temporarily established itself in their city under the command of Darth Vader to capture Luke Skywalker. Lando betrayed his old friend Han Solo so he wouldn't have to put up with an Imperial garrison on the planet. In the end, Lando was repeatedly tricked into giving the order to evacuate the City while he escaped with Leia Organa and Chewbacca.

Shortly after the Battle of Endor, Lando and Luke Skywalker reprogrammed the damaged and aggressive Lobot and drove the Imperials back to nearby refineries. Lando gifted Cloud City to the Ugnaught workers, but remained a Baron.

In Thrawn's time, garrisons still existed at the most remote refineries and sent tibanna to the Grand Admiral. Eleven years after the Battle of Yavin, Skywalker rescued his second Apprentice from the ruins of Tibannopolis.

A few months passed, and Cloud City filled with smugglers and spies. Tibanna gas was pouring out in the form of contraband. Jedi Kyle Katarn rescued Lando Calrissian and discovered that the City was so disturbed by a Rodian criminal, Reelo Baruk. Together they traveled there to stop the smugglers. Katarn thought a dark acolyte, the Reborn Desann. Desann was not there but an alliance of the Imperial Remnant and the smugglers was discovered, which were repelled by Calrissian, Katarn, and the security forces. Later the New Republic arrived from Sulon. But everything had already stopped.

Bespin remained in Ugnaught hands, this time definitely safe from the Yuuzhan Vong years later.
