Berrocalejo is a Spanish municipality, in the province of Cáceres, autonomous community of Extremadura.

The coat of arms of Berrocalejo was approved by means of the "Order of November 2, 1993, approving the heraldic coat of arms and municipal flag, for the Berrocalejo City Council", published in the Official Gazette of Extremadura on November 13, 1993 and approved by the Minister of the Presidency and Labor Joaquín Cuello, after having approved the file by the city council on November 30, 1992 and June 8, 1993 and having received said file a favorable report from the Advisory Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Junta de Extremadura on September 22, 1993. The shield is defined as follows:

Shield cut. First, silver, berrocal in its color. Second, of azur, bridge, of silver, on waves of sugar and silver. To the bell, Royal Crown closed.

Physical geography

Location

The municipality of Berrocalejo borders with:

  • The Gordo west, north and east;
  • Peraleda de San Román y Valdelacasa de Tajo south.

Orography

The term is mostly rugged, where hills abound; the maximum elevation is in the southern and northern part. The height oscillates between 300 and 433 m, the highest level being Cerro Cabeza Nebrosa, with an altitude of 446 m. It is located in the Rivero and owes its name to the fact that in ancient times this place was populated with Junipers.

Climate

The term is very sunny, the hottest day of the year is usually July 25, the day of Santiago. The coldest days are usually from December 15 to 25. The rainiest month is usually December. It rarely snows, and it doesn't even set when it hits the ground.

History

Since its reconquest in 1085, Berrocalejo became part of the powerful Community of Villa y Tierra de Ávila, and in fact belonged to the province of Ávila until 1833. After the fall of the Old Regime, the town became a constitutional municipality and is included in the region of Extremadura. Since 1834 it was integrated into the Navalmoral de la Mata Judicial Party. In the 1842 census it had 130 households and 712 neighbors.

Berrocalejo has had the following demographic evolution since 1900:

Berrocalejo had a total of 98 inhabitants in 2008, its population pyramid having an aged structure in which only 24 people were under 45 years of age, with no person under 15 in the town.

Religious monuments

Catholic parish church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, in the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz, Diocese of Plasencia, Archpriesthood of Navalmoral de la Mata.

Natural monuments

  • Peña, Watchtower on the banks of the Tagus River;
  • Valdecañas reservoir.

Roman Monuments

Under the waters of the Tagus River is a Roman-built bridge, known as Puente del Conde. When the level of the river drops you can see the upper part of it.

Culture

Festivities

The town festivals are dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and are celebrated on September 8.

Gastronomy

Among the typical dishes of Berrocalejo, the breve, the cachuela, the migas from Extremadura, the lamb stew and the cocido from Extremadura stand out. The tortilla, scrambled eggs and asparagus soup are also typical.
