Berlin Olympic Games 1916
The 1916 Berlin Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the VI Olympiad, were to be held in the city of Berlin, Germany, in the year 1916 However, the war events of World War I led to the cancellation of the Games. Berlin was selected as the host city during the 14th Session of the International Olympic Committee, held on July 4, 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden. The German capital defeated Alexandria, Amsterdam, Brussels, Budapest and Cleveland. Later, in 1936, Berlin held the 11th edition of the Games.
History
In August 1912 construction work began on the Deutsches Stadion. It was planned to have a capacity of 18,000 spectators. On June 8, 1913, the stadium was inaugurated in the presence of 60,000 people. After the outbreak of World War I, the Games were cancelled.
A winter week had been planned for sporting events in speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey and Nordic skiing, arguably the first Winter Olympic Games. In 1931, Berlin defeated Barcelona and won the 1936 Olympic Games.
