The Berlin International Film Festival (German: Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin), popularly known as Berlinale, is a prestigious film festival international cinema held in the city of Berlin (Germany). It was founded in West Berlin in 1951 and has been held annually in February since 1978. It is considered one of the "Big Three" film festivals along with Venice (1932) and Cannes (1946).
The prize figure consists of a Bear, and the most valuable is the one forged in gold. The Golden Bear and the Silver Bears for Best Director and Best Performance, both male and female, are awarded during February at the Berlinale Palast. The Honorary Golden Bear is also awarded, for a lifetime as a director, actor or actress.
With around 300,000 tickets sold and 500,000 admissions each year, it has the largest public attendance of any annual film festival. In addition, up to 400 films are shown in various sections of film genres in each edition. The Berlin Festival is a category "A" accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) together with the Venice and Cannes festivals.
History
The history of this festival begins thanks to the initiative of Oscar Martay when, on October 9, 1950, he decided to gather a committee to create an international film festival in Berlin. This committee was made up, in addition to Martay and his friend George Turner, by two representatives of the administration of the Berlin Senate, four representatives of the German film industry and a journalist. This would give rise, in 1951, to the first ceremony of the festival under the name of "Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin", held from June 6 to 17, with the awards ceremony being on the 18th.
On June 6, the festival opens with the film Rebecca, by Alfred Hitchcock, the star of the film Joan Fontaine being invited to the event. Despite having spent six years from the end of World War II, part of Berlin is still in ruins, its reconstruction had already begun but it was still far from reactivating the great cultural activity, as occurred in the 1920s, but despite they all wanted to monopolize the attention on the festival with the reason that it was an example of a “showcase of the free world” in the divided city.
The first year the awards will be chosen by a jury of German experts, but under pressure from the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) it was decided that the following year's awards would be chosen by the public, since only category “A” festivals may have a jury of experts.
In 1956, finally, the FIAPF will grant category "A" to the Berlin festival, so that from that year it could have the right to award the prizes through an international jury.
In recent years, the proximity of the festival dates to the Oscar awards ceremony has generated inconvenience. For this reason, the possibility of holding the festival in May shortly after the Sundance Film Festival is being contemplated.
