Berbegal is a municipality in the Somontano de Barbastro region in the Province of Huesca (Spain), located between the Cinca and Alcanadre rivers raised on a rock, its distance from Huesca is 50 km.

Toponymy

The term Berbegal may come from the Arabic بيربغال BIR BIGĀL "mule pit" or بير بقال BIR BIQĀL, "shopkeeper's well"

History

  • Its origins are Romans.
    • Its creation is a consequence of the need for a settlement at the service of the road that united the cities of Ilerda and Osca
  • On May 1, 1174 King Alfonso II of Aragon gave the bishop of Huesca the churches of Pertusa and Berbegal (DURAN, Diplomatic Collection of Huesca Cathedral, No. 302)
  • On April 4, 1258 King James I of Aragon donated to Pedro Martín de Luna half of the fish, dinners and redemption of the military service of Berbegal (SINUÉS, No. 476)
  • On May 30, 1294 was real-time (SINUÉS, No. 477)
  • On October 6, 1409 King Martin I of Aragon gave Pedro de Torrellas the place of Berbegal, with its villages (SINUÉS, No. 483)
  • On January 31, 1510 King Fernando II of Aragon confirmed the investiture made in favor of Pedro de Torrellas (SINUÉS, no.495)

Economy

  • The Berbegal economy has undergone a major transformation over the past few years, since it had always been based on agriculture, later with the emergence of farms, (porcinas, poultry and bovines), the activity in the primary sector was complemented, where the extensive breeding of sheep is also remarkable, although this activity is losing momentum, as well as the general agricultural activity, in part due to the problems that go through. This has made a large part of the population devoted to working in the secondary and tertiary sectors, both inside and outside the town. Because Berbegal still maintains an adequate population (compared to its surroundings), this allows the small trade to remain (two shops, a restaurant bar, a butcher shop, a bakery, a stan, a pharmacy and a health center). They also exist in the locality: a construction company, two dedicated to the installation of irrigations, a mechanical workshop and a company dedicated to the manufacture of boiler and boiler parts in general. In addition to this, Berbegal offers a newly created industrial polygon for the installation of companies.
