The flag of Benin was originally adopted in 1958 as the flag of the newly created self-government of the former colony of Dahomey (referred to as the Republic of Dahomey) within the French Community. After the country's independence in 1960, the same flag was maintained. In 1975 the communist regime of the People's Republic of Benin adopted a new flag: a green cloth with a red star in its upper left corner, symbolizing the revolutionary people, with a 2:3 ratio. On March 1, 1990, the old flag was restored, after the fall of the communist regime.

The design is made up of three stripes with the Pan-African colors: the vertical one next to the pole is green and represents hope, the upper horizontal yellow one to abundance and the lower red one to courage.
