Belgium flag

ImprimirCitar

The flag of Belgium consists of three equal vertical bands of black, yellow and red; the vertical design is based on the flag of France, while the colors were taken from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant. The unusual proportions of the flag (13:15) are of unknown origin.

The flag was officially adopted on January 23, 1831, after Belgian independence from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830. It played an important role during the revolution and its colors served as a reminder of an old ensign with horizontal bands used during an earlier revolt in 1789, when the Netherlands was under Austrian rule.
