A bed base (from French, sommier ) is the set made up of the mattress and its base. It consists of a metal or wooden frame on which a series of sheets of wood or other material are embedded transversely. The wooden ones are usually beech or, in its cheapest range, poplar. Bed bases are also made with fiberglass sheets, although they are less widespread. In double sizes, the frame has a central spar.

The firmness of the bed base will depend on the number and width of the slats available. Likewise, it can offer firmness adjustment systems to adapt to the different weight of users. The adequacy is achieved by grouping or releasing a certain number of sheets by moving some tensioners.

The blades can be adapted to the shape of the body if they use tilting capsules. In this case, the capsules do not make a rigid connection but, in the shape of a butterfly, pivot vertically and horizontally depending on the pressure they support.

Depending on the characteristics of the model, the legs are attached by means of a clamp if they are metallic or with a thread if they are made of wood or plastic.

Kangaroo bed bases

Kangaroo bed bases are made up of two conjoined bed bases.

A first bed base, which has taller legs to make room for a second bed base with folding legs, which is placed below. In order for the second bed to be inserted under the first, it is important both to have a greater height of the legs, and that they leave one of the sides free through which the lower and upper bed base can access and move.

Likewise, the lower bed base has folding legs, which allow the bed to be flush with the ground to be stored under the upper one when it is not going to be used.

Articulated bed base

Joint sleepers

An adjustable bed base has a movable top and sometimes bottom so it can be adjusted to a number of different positions.

For people with certain types of back problems or reduced mobility, sleeping on an adjustable bed that is positioned at a slight incline (30º to 45º, for example) can be comfortable, with the torso positioned higher than the lower extremities and some support below the knees to bend the knees to a slight angle. The combination of the upper body descent and knee support can help to alleviate some of the stress from the lower back. Provided the person is thus comfortable at night, this position can support the curves of the spine and relieve pressure on the entire body.

The articulated bed base does not admit spring mattresses combined with latex or polyurethane foam mattresses.

Although most popular in hospitals or other medical facilities, adjustable beds are being used extensively in homes to provide assistance with sleeping in a variety of positions.
