BBEdit
BBEdit is a text editor for Mac OS and, since its release, also for Mac OS X. It was originally designed for editing HTML and is specially designed for programmers and web designers. This editor is created by the company Bare Bones Software.
History
The first version of BBEdit was a trial version, to replace the default editor on the system, this version could not read files larger than 32K. Due to its great support for plugins and the success of the HTML plugin, the developers decided to buy the rights from its author and include it in the editor. The tools were optionally included in version 4, and in version 5.0 a menu was added.
BBEdit was available for free at its initial release in 1991, but was commercialized in May 1993 with the release of version 2.5
At the same time, Bare Bones Software also made a less-featured version of BBEdit 2.5 called BBEdit Lite available for free. This version was discontinued in version 6.1 and replaced with TextWrangler, which was available at a lower cost. Several years later, it too was released for free.
Features
BBEdit is designed for use by software developers and web designers. It has native support for many programming languages and custom modules can be created by users to support any language. BBEdit is not a word processor, it does not format the text.
Supported languages
BBEdit supports underlining in many programming languages. Some are: ANSI C, C++, Fortran HTML, Java, JavaScript, JSP, Object Pascal, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, SQL, Tcl, TeX, Unix scripts, and XML.
