Bao Ninh (Nghệ An, 1952) is a Vietnamese writer best known for his novel The Sorrow of War about the Vietnam War.
Published in 1991, the work was an immediate bestseller in Vietnam and around the world, although it was initially distrusted by the Vietnamese government, due to its unpatriotic view of the "American war" (using the Vietnamese term). The book tells how a high school boy fought for 10 years and was the sole survivor of a battalion of 500 soldiers.
Bao Ninh has written another novel, "Steppe", which she has not wanted to publish yet, perhaps because she feels it is not as natural as the first.
A short story by Bao Ninh, Khắc dấu mạn thuyền, translated by Linh Dinh, is included in the anthology Night, Again.
