Balnibarbi is a fictional country featured in the novel "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift.

The capital of Balnibarbi is a floating city or fortress called Laputa, where its king resides. Like the inhabitants of the floating fortress, Blanibarbi's men are absent-minded and capricious, holding science, astronomy, music, and mathematics in high regard, though never to the degree held in the capital city.

Balnibarbi's most important land city is Lagado, about half the size of London in 1770. The city is famous for its Grand Academy of Draughtsmen, where scholars from all walks of life gather. Lemuel Gulliver visited the academy, where he was able to witness experiments to obtain solar energy from cucumbers, create resistant spider silks, and reduce language to a set of monosyllable nouns, among all. All experiments were reasonably crowned with utter failure, but that never ruined the academy's reputation.

The second most important city of Balnibarbi is Lindalino, famous for rebelling against the authority of the king and his flying fortress. To this end, they managed to defeat the siege of the floating island using magnet towers capable of bringing down the city of Laputa.

Satire

The relationship between Balnibarbi and Laputa is a satire of Great Britain's relationship of submission and domination over the island of Ireland, Balnibarbi being the latter. Swift, as a good Irishman, aware of the suffering that British domination inflicted on his people, refers to Great Britain with the name of "The Whore", with the intention of reflecting a more than obvious disdain for it..
