The Bahrain International Circuit (in Arabic حلبة البحرين الدولية barahin al-intarnals wadjaviyaa), also known as the International Circuit de Sakhir, is an autodrome located in the desert area of Sakhir, within the South Governorate of the country, approximately 31 km from the capital Manama. Since 2004 it is the current venue of the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, being at the time the first race held in the Middle East within said category.
History
The construction of the circuit to be able to host a date of the Formula 1 season was a national objective for Bahrain, promoted by Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The organizers of the Grand Prix feared that the construction needed to hold the event would not be completed in time, and asked F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone to postpone it to 2005. Ecclestone refused, and the race went ahead despite the fact that the autodrome was not completely finished.
One of the possible problems that were feared in the event had to do with the fact that the circuit is located in the middle of the desert, with which the winds could drag sand towards the track and thus alter the operation of the machines. In any case, the organizers of the Grand Prix managed to keep the sand off the track, by using an adhesive that is sprayed on the sands surrounding the track.
The circuit was designed by the German Hermann Tilke, and cost approximately 150 million dollars. Currently, it is also used as a scoring date for the World Endurance Championship since 2012 with a 6-hour race.
Shortly after Formula 1 testing in February 2014, the track's first turn was named after German driver Michael Schumacher in honor of his achievements and also in support of him after he suffered a near-fatal skiing accident at end of December 2013.
