Bachelorette (song)
"Bachelorette" is a song by Icelandic singer Björk, released as the second single from her 1997 album Homogenic.
The song was originally written for a Bernardo Bertolucci film, but the project was withdrawn. The Bachelorette lyrics were written by Sjón, as Björk recounts on her website:
Because I wanted the letters to be so epic, I got my friend Sjón - who is a poet in Iceland - to write them. We sat together at the kitchen table and drank a lot of red wine and told him the whole story for hours and days and wrote the words of that story.
The song is emotionally charged and theatrical, following the album's theme of "rhythms and strings," but also includes other instruments such as timpani, timpani, Alpine horns and accordions that make the stronger and more dramatic song. Björk herself describes the story of the song as "Isobel goes to town".
About the song
"Bachelorette" It was written by Björk and composed by Sjón. The production was in charge of Björk. It is the sequel to "Isobel" and "Human Behaviour" and that culminates the saga.
Björk did several experiments with this song. When still "Homogenic" was in development, this song was called "Bertolucci", and had an introduction and an end composed by an accordion. In the final version, the accordion introduction was cut and only the one at the end was left, but much shorter.
In addition, something like a "Homogenic Promotional" where Bachelorette was called "Shape Shifter", and had a finale full of melodic beats.
Video Clip
It was directed by Michel Gondry. Isobel finds a blank book in her garden and decides to travel to the city tired of the countryside. She then discovers that according to what she is doing, the book writes itself and when it is finished, under the title "My Story"; she introduces him to a publisher and falls in love with the publisher. The book turns out to be a complete success and when it is presented in a theater, the original copy begins to erase itself and rewrite itself. Tired of having so many different characters, the book loses all its success and so Isobel decides to put it back where she found it.
Three versions of the single were released.
