Azazel (fallen angel)
Azazel or Azael (Hebrew: עֲזָאזֵל, Azazel; Arabic: ازازيل , Azāzīl) is a term that appears in the Bible associated with the rite of the Day of Atonement when lots were cast for two goats, one for Yahweh and the other for Azazel. In some traditions of Judaism and Christianity, it is the name of a fallen angel. In the rabbinic sense, it is not the name of an entity but literally means "for total elimination", that is, designating the name of the goat that was sent into the desert on the Day of Atonement carrying the sins of the Israelites to thus to purify the Tabernacle.
He is also known for his appearance in the Book of Picatrix.
Origin of name
Its origin is Hebrew and means "the emissary goat" or "scapegoat", set forth in Leviticus 16:8-10. It appears four times in the Bible, all of them in the record of the regulations related to the annual Day of Atonement. (Le 16:8, 10, 26) The name comes from two root words: aze, meaning goat, and azel, meaning disappear. Another possible origin of the name is that it is a derivative of the Hebrew words -az, which means rough and -el-, which means powerful[quote required] (it should be noted that this suffix applies to almost all angels and a good part of the fallen angels). In such a case, it would be an allusion to the mountain from where the goats fell for their sacrifice[citation required].
This name is mentioned in the apocryphal book of Enoch, the Apocalypse of Abraham, and others in Jewish literature. In the Bible it is not usually interpreted as an evil spirit, but rather it is supposed as the scapegoat ceremony that consisted of sending the scapegoat to wander in the desert together with another goat which is sacrificed before God. The azazel is then driven to the outskirts of the desert and released as proof that there is no more guilt in the community. By taking upon himself the sins of the people, forgiveness was possible.
