Avellinia
Avellinia is a genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to Eurasia.
Description
They are annual plants. Leaves with slightly welded margins at the base; ligule short, obtuse and toothed, membranous; limb generally convoluted. Inflorescence in a lax panicle. Laterally compressed spikelets, with 2-4 hermaphroditic flowers articulated with the rachilla. Glumes 2, very unequal, keeled; the lower single-veined, the upper three-veined. Lemma with 3-5 veins, bidentate; dorsal awn inserted into upper 1/3 to 1/4 of lemma, straight. obtuse callus Palea shorter than the middle of the lemma, with 2 ciliated keels, forked. bilobed lodicules. Ovary glabrous. Caryopsis narrowly fusiform, not furrowed. Linear thread.
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Filippo Parlatore and published in Plantae Novae vel Minus Notae... 59. 1842. The type species is: Avellinia michelii (Savi) Parl.

The generic name was given in honor of Giulio Avellino, a Neapolitan botanist.

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 7, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 12.
