Asmodeus
Asmodeus (Hebrew: אַשְמְדּאָי, ʾAšməddāy, Ancient Greek: Ἀσμοδαῖος, Asmodaios) also called Asmodeus, Asmodaios, Asmodai, Hasmoday, Chashmodai, Azmonden or Sidonay, is one of the princes of demons in the demonology of the Abrahamic religions. It appears in the biblical (deuterocanonical) book of Tobit or Book of Tobias and is also mentioned in the Talmud, in apocryphal literature, in the History of the Prophets and Kings by the Muslim author Tabari and in treatises on demonology.
His name derives from the Avestan *aēšma-daēva, meaning "daeva of anger", although not in this compound form but as the daēva Aēšma, mentioned in Zoroastrian texts, from which it passed to Judaism when these people were part of the Persian Empire, from there it was taken over by early Christianity.
Description
In the Book of Tobit, Asmodeus falls in love with Sara, Raquel's daughter, and every time she gets married, he kills her husband on their wedding night. He thus manages to kill seven men, preventing them from consummating the marriage. Later, Sara gets engaged to a young man named Tobías. He receives the help of the archangel Rafael, who teaches him how to get rid of the devil. In this way, Tobias takes a fish and tears out its heart, kidneys and liver, placing them on coals. Asmodeus cannot bear the vapors thus released, and he flees to Egypt, where Raphael chains him. No more is known about the fate of this demon, but it is presented to him as a symbol of carnal desire.
In the Talmud, Asmodeus does not appear to be as evil a creature as in other books, but instead recounts stories about his dealings with King Solomon. Apparently, Solomon came to trap the devil and forced him to build the Temple in Jerusalem. In another medieval Jewish legend, Asmodeus and Solomon traded for each other for several years. In another, Asmodeus is presented as the king of all demons, similar to the Christian concept of Satan, and as Lilith's lover after she abandoned Adam.
Asmodeo and Samael "The Poison of God" are two of the names given to Lucifer after tempting Eve with the fruit of one of the forbidden trees (the knowledge of good and evil), after his fall he was paired with Lilith, Adam's first wife, and with she spawned thousands of demons.
Asmodeus is sometimes credited as the father of the wizard Merlin. In the Middle Ages, when they wanted to associate the 7 deadly sins with his "responsible demons", he was referred to as the demon of lust.
