The Asahi Shimbun (朝日新聞, Asahi Shinbun) is the second most popular newspaper in Japan, behind the Yomiuri Shimbun .

Asahi Shimbun Publishing Co. offices in Osaka, Japan.

The newspaper calls itself ideologically "liberal and new left", in contrast to other ideological currents exposed by competitors such as the Yomiuri Shimbun (center-conservative), Sankei Shimbun (right-wing conservative) and Mainichi Shimbun (center-left). traditional). However, the traditional Japanese left frequently accuses the newspaper of being conservative, while conservatives accuse it of being left-wing, or it is even accused of supporting the Japanese Communist Party and being communist by sectors of the right. Its support for rapprochement positions with China causes the newspaper to be considered "anti-American and pro-Chinese" by the American press, despite the fact that the newspaper frequently criticizes the communist regimes of China and North Korea.

A pacifist since the end of World War II, the publication has 3,000 journalists, including foreign correspondents.

The newspaper has a partnership with the International Herald Tribune newspaper and publishes the International Herald Tribune/Asahi Shimbun as its English version which replaced the previous English version titled Asahi Evening News. It also has another alliance with the official newspaper of the People's Republic of China 人民日报 (Rénmín Ribao, People's Daily).

The column Tensei Jingo (天声人語, "The divine voice is the language of the people", in reference to the Latin phrase Vox Populi, Vox Dei, 'voice of the people, voice of God') has been published daily since 1904, dealing with recent news and social issues. The column is also available as an electronic newsletter (newsletter).
