Asafa Powell
Asafa Powell (Spanish Town, November 23, 1982) is a Jamaican former athlete, 1.90 m tall and 88 kg in weight, a specialist in sprint events who held the record world championship in the 100-meter dash category, achieved in Rieti, Italy, with the mark of 9.74 s, exceeding the previous record by 3 hundredths of a second.
In Athens 2004 he started as the favorite to win the final of the 100 meter sprint, but he only finished fifth, thus missing out on the medals.
On June 14, 2005, he broke the world record in the 100-meter dash, lowering Tim Montgomery's previous mark by one hundredth, leaving him at 9.77 s. The mark was valid when carried out with a wind in favor of 1.6 m/s. Powell ran again at 9.77 on June 11, 2006, and August 18, 2006.
In 2006 he was voted athlete of the year by the IAAF.
On September 9, 2007, he once again lowered the world record for the 100-meter dash to 9.74 s during the semifinals of this event at the Rieti (Italy) athletics meeting. That same year she was a bronze medalist at the Osaka World Cup. On May 31, 2008, he lost the record for the 100-meter dash when fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt achieved a time of 9.72 s in the test.
She won the Olympic gold medal in the 4X100 in Beijing 2008, but on January 25, 2017, she was withdrawn for having her teammate Nesta Carter tested positive for doping.
He got the bronze medal in the 100 meters at the 2009 World Cup in Berlin with a time of 9.84 s.
In July 2013, Powell was accused of doping with a stimulant after failing a doping test after a race. He was suspended for 18 months until December 2014, but after appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport his sanction was lifted. reduced to 6 months.
Later, at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Portland in 2016, he won the silver medal in the 60-meter event.
On November 26, 2022, he announced his withdrawal from the tracks through his official Instagram account.
