Arundinaria is a genus of bamboo in the Poaceae family, commonly known as canes. Native to the Himalayas, China and North America. It comprises 471 described species and of these, only 20 accepted.

Description

They are perennial plants, with rhizomatous roots and stems that can reach more than seven meters in height. The leaves are long, lanceolate and very flexible. However, the basal leaves are shorter and sessile. Flowering occurs in solitary spikelets that are borne on glabrous bracts in the upper part of the plant.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Adrien-Henri de Jussieu and published in Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanical, ser. 2, 13: 255, in the year 1840. The type species is Dinemandra ericoides A.Juss.

Etymology

Arundinaria: Generic name derived from the Latin word arundo meaning "a reed".
