Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (pronounced/£a/n/lt нананани ри дури урани устани устанани устунанания/n/n/n/( listen)) (Thal, Styria, Austria; July 30, 1947) is an actor, businessman, politician and professional ex-physicist from Austria. He served as the thirty-eighth governor of the State of California in two terms from 2003 to 2011. Its net assets are $450 million.

Schwarzenegger began weight training when he was fifteen, won the Mr. Universe title at twenty, and went on to win seven consecutive Mister Olympia victories between 1970 and 1980. He remains an icon of the sport and has penned several books and articles about his practice. The Arnold Sports Festival event, named after him, is considered one of the best bodybuilding competitions today. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time and his most charismatic ambassador.

Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame beginning in the 1980s as an icon of Hollywood action movies. His breakthrough came as the lead in the sword and sorcery epic Conan the Barbarian (1982), a blockbuster that spawned a sequel. In 1984 he appeared as a villain in James Cameron's successful The Terminator (1984), a role he has reprized in several sequels, most notably the acclaimed Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). He has starred in other action and science fiction hits such as Commando (1985), Predator (1987), The Running Man (1987), Total Recall (1990), Last Action Hero (1993) and True Lies (1994).

As a Republican candidate, Arnold Schwarzenegger was inaugurated on November 17, 2003, Governor of the State of California; he was re-elected in the 2006 California gubernatorial election. His term completed in 2011, Schwarzenegger resumed his film career. He was nicknamed the Austrian Oak and the Styrian Oak in his bodybuilding days, Arnie during his acting career and more recently the Governor —a contraction of Governor and Terminator.

Early Years

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Thal, a small town near Graz, Austria, and was baptized Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger. His parents were Aurelia Jadrny (1922-1998) and local police chief Gustav Schwarzenegger (1907 -1972) who were married on October 20, 1945; Arnold had a brother, Meinhard Schwarzenegger (July 17, 1946), who died in a traffic accident on May 20, 1971. According to Schwarzenegger, his parents were "very strict": "Back in Austria it was a completely different world, if we did something bad or we disobeyed our parents, the punishments were never lacking." Arnold grew up in a Catholic family that attended mass every Sunday. Before dedicating himself to bodybuilding (he began at the age of fifteen), he played soccer, boxing and track and field, all locally, until the day came when he told his parents that he "wanted to be the strongest in the world".

Gustav had a preference for Meinhard, the older of the two brothers. His favoritism was evident, leading to strong rumors that Arnold was not his son. Schwarzenegger said of his father: "He had no patience to listen or understand your problems... there was a wall, a real one." Schwarzenegger had a good relationship with his mother and maintained contact with her until her death. Schwarzenegger would later commission the Simon Wiesenthal Center to investigate his father's military record, in which no atrocity appeared, despite the fact that Gustav was a member of the Nazi Party and of the SA Sturmabteilung (Assault Section) known as the Brownshirts and dismantled in 1934 after the Night of the long knives and being integrated into the SS, although present at political events until the end of World War II. At school, Schwarzenegger was an average student, but he was noted for his "joy and good humor". At home they had economic problems. Schwarzenegger remembers how he lived one of the important moments of his childhood when the family was able to buy a refrigerator.

As a child, Schwarzenegger played many sports influenced by his father. He began weight training in 1960, when his football coach took him to a gym. At the age of fourteen, Schwarzenegger chose bodybuilding over soccer. Schwarzenegger responded the following to a question about how old he started lifting weights: "I started weight training at the age of fifteen, but I had been participating in sports, like soccer, for years, so I was pretty good. developed, or at least enough to be able to start weightlifting." However, his official website says: "At fourteen, he began an intense training program with Dan Farmer, studied psychology at fifteen (for learn more about the power of the mind over the body) and at seventeen he began his career in competitions." During a conference in 2001 he said: "I formed my own plan with fourteen years. My father wanted me to be a policeman like him. My mother wanted me to study professional training.” Schwarzenegger started going to a gym in Graz, where he also went to the local cinema to see bodybuilding professionals like Reg Park, Steve Reeves or Johnny Weissmuller. "I was inspired by people like Reg Park and Steve Reeves." When Reeves died in 2000, Schwarzenegger remembered him fondly: "As a teenager, I grew up with Steve Reeves. His significant achievements allowed me to believe in what was possible even when others around me didn't always understand my dreams... Steve Reeves has been a part of everything I've been fortunate enough to achieve." In 1961, Schwarzenegger met the former Mr. Austria Kurt Marnul, who invited him to train with him at the gym in Graz. He was such a diligent young man that he was known to sneak into the gym even on weekends when it was closed. "It made me sick to miss training... The next morning I couldn't look in the mirror." When Schwarzenegger was asked about his first experience with cinema as a child, he replied: "I was very young, but I remember my father took me to an Austrian cinema to see a news bulletin. The first real movie I remember was a John Wayne movie."

In 1971, his brother Meinhard died in a car accident: he had been drinking and died on impact. Schwarzenegger did not attend his funeral.Meinhard was to marry Erika Knapp, and they had a three-year-old son named Patrick. Schwarzenegger paid for Patrick's education and helped him immigrate to the United States. Gustav died the following year of a stroke. In the film Pumping Iron), Schwarzenegger said he did not go to his father's funeral because he was training for a contest. Later, both he and the film's producer said that this story was taken from another bodybuilder to show the lengths to which training can be taken, and to make Schwarzenegger's image colder, like a machine, to heighten controversy. Barbara Baker, his first serious girlfriend, said that he told her of his father's death without emotion and that he never spoke of his brother. Over the years, he has given as many as three different versions of why. he did not attend his father's funeral.

In an interview with Fortune magazine in 2004, Schwarzenegger said he suffered what "would now be called abuse" by his father:

He threw me out of my hair, hit me with belts. He was also passing the boy next door. That's how it was then. Many of the boys I met had crumbled emotionally, that was the Austrian-German mentality. They didn't want to create an individual. A standard had to be met. I was one of those who got out of line, and one who could never be emotionally crumbled. So, I became a rebel. Every time someone hit me, and every time someone told me I couldn't do something, I said, "This isn't going to last much longer, because I'm going to get out of here. I want to get rich. I want to be someone."

Youth

Schwarzenegger did his military service in 1965. He won the Mr. Europe championship in the junior category in 1965. Schwarzenegger deserted to be able to participate in the competition and was therefore locked up for a week: «Participating in the competition meant so much to I didn't think much of the consequences."

"The title of Mr. Universe was my ticket to America, the land of opportunity, where I could become a star and get rich." Schwarzenegger made his first plane flight in 1966, to participate in the competition of NABBA Mr. Universe in London. He finished in second place due to not having the muscular definition of American champion Chester Yorton.

Charles "Wag" Bennett, one of the judges for the 1966 competition, was impressed with Schwarzenegger and offered to train him. As Schwarzenegger had little money he invited her to stay at his house above one of his two gyms in Forest Gate, London. Yorton's leg muscle definition had been superior, and Schwarzenegger, under a training program supervised by Bennett, concentrated on improving that aspect. By staying in East End he was able to improve his level of English, although he continued to have difficulties.

In addition, in 1966, Schwarzenegger had the opportunity to meet Reg Park, his childhood idol, who became his friend and mentor. The training paid off, and in 1967, at the age of 20, Schwarzenegger won the Mr. Universe title for the first time, making him the youngest to receive it. He would win the title three more times., Schwarzenegger returned to Munich, training four to six hours a day, attending business school, and working at Rolf Putzinger's gym, where he was from 1966 to 1968. In 1968, he returned to London and won his fifth title. from Mr. Universe.

Move to the United States

Schwarzenegger with President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Schwarzenegger moved to the United States in September 1968, at the age of twenty-one. "Naturally, when I came to this country, my accent was very bad and also very strong, which was an obstacle when I began my acting career.." In the United States he trained at the Gold Gym in Santa Monica, under the supervision of Joe Weider. From 1970 to 1974, one of Schwarzenegger's training partners was Ric Drasin, a professional wrestler who had designed the gym's original logo in 1973. Schwarzenegger also became close friends with wrestler Billy Graham. In 1970, at the age of 23, he won the first Mr. Olympia title in New York, and would win it a total of seven times.

Schwarzenegger said that his big dream since he was ten years old was to move to the United States. He asked himself what he was doing in Austria, and thought that bodybuilding was his 'ticket to America': "I'm sure that I can go to the United States if he won Mr. Universe." LA Weekly said in 2002 that Schwarzenegger is the most famous immigrant who "(got) over a thick Austrian accent and transcended the unlikely world bodybuilding to become the biggest movie star in the world in the 1990s".

Bodybuilder career

Schwarzenegger is considered among the most important figures in bodybuilding history, and his legacy is commemorated at the annual Arnold Classic bodybuilding competition. Schwarzenegger remains one of the visible faces of bodybuilding long after his retirement.

For many years, he wrote a monthly column for the bodybuilding magazines Muscle & Fitness and Flex In 2004 he signed a contract as executive editor of the same that he rescinded in 2005 when the political opposition accused him of playing in two bands, due to a bill about nutritional supplements. The magazines agreed to donate $250,000 a year to the California Sports and Fitness Council proposals, which were canceled upon termination of the contract.

Among his titles as an athlete, the Junior European Championship in 1965 and the European Championship in 1966 stand out. NABBA Mr. Universe four times, IFBB Mr. Universe once and Mr. Olympia seven times, a record that stood until in 1991 Lee Haney won his eighth straight.

Mr. Olympia

Schwarzenegger's goal was to become the greatest bodybuilder in the world, that is, to win the Mr. Olympia. In his first attempt in 1969, he lost to three-time champion Sergio Oliva. However, Schwarzenegger returned in 1970 and won the competition, becoming the youngest to do so.

He continued his streak from 1971 to 1974. Months before the 1975 contest, film directors George Butler and Robert Fiore persuaded Schwarzenegger to compete to record his training in the documentary called Pumping Iron. Schwarzenegger only had three months to prepare for the competition, having lost enough weight to appear in the film Stay Hungry with Jeff Bridges. Lou Ferrigno was not enough of a threat and a lighter than usual Schwarzenegger won the 1975 Mr. Olympia championship for the sixth consecutive year, beating Franco Columbu. Following the 1975 contest, Schwarzenegger announced his retirement from professional bodybuilding.

However, Schwarzenegger came out of retirement to compete in the 1980 Mr. Olympia. Schwarzenegger was training for his role in Conan the Barbarian, and got so fit because of the training (racing, horseback riding and fencing) that he decided he wanted to win Mr. Olympia one last time. He kept this plan a secret, in case he was injured while training. Schwarzenegger had been hired by a television station to do commentary, but at the last moment he told everyone: "Why not compete?"Schwarzenegger ended up winning that edition with just seven weeks of preparation. After being proclaimed Mr. Olympia for the seventh time, he announced his final retirement.

Use of anabolics

Schwarzenegger admitted to using anabolic androgenic steroids while they were legal. He called the drugs "tissue growth. & # 34;

In 1999, Schwarzenegger sued Dr. Willi Heepe, a German doctor who predicted Schwarzenegger's early death due to steroid use and heart problems. Because the doctor had never examined him personally, Schwarzenegger was awarded $10,000 in damages in a German court. In 1999, Schwarzenegger also sued and settled with the American tabloid The Globe, which had made similar predictions. In 1996, a year before cardiovascular surgery to replace his aortic heart valve, Schwarzenegger publicly defended the use of steroids during his bodybuilding career. Schwarzenegger underwent surgery in 1997 to replace a heart valve. Experts recommended a mechanical one, but he refused because he couldn't train after the operation.

Acting career

First roles

He was cast as Hercules in the 1969 film Hercules in New York, credited as Arnold Strong. His accent was so strong that his lines were dubbed in post-production. His second appearance was as an uncredited deaf-mute thug in Robert Altman's film The Long Goodbye in 1973, after which he played a substantially larger role in the 1976 film Stay Hungry for which he won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year. Schwarzenegger declared about his beginnings in the world of cinema: «The beginning was very difficult for me. Agents and castings told me that my body was very strange, that I had a funny accent and that my name was very long. They told me I had to change it. Basically, anywhere I showed up, they told me I didn't have a chance."

Schwarzenegger came to the attention of the industry with the film set in the world of bodybuilding Pumping Iron (1977), part of the film was fiction. In 1991, Schwarzenegger bought the rights to the film, shots and photos. Schwarzenegger auditioned for the role of the Hulk in the television series The Incredible Hulk , but did not get the role due up to him; the role would go to Lou Ferrigno. Schwarzenegger appeared with Kirk Douglas and Ann-Margret in the 1979 comedy Cactus Jack, a notorious box office flop and where Schwarzenegger adds in his memoirs that his participation in that film it only served him to gain a greater affinity for horseback riding. In that same year, 1979, he also played professional bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay, Jayne Mansfield's husband, in the biopic The Jayne Mansfield Story, based on the life of the 1950s actress.

Stardom

The film that catapulted Schwarzenegger's career was Conan the Barbarian, a sword and sorcery film directed by John Milius in 1982, which was a box office success. In 1984 Schwarzenegger would star in a second film part, Conan the Destroyer, which was directed by Richard Fleischer and which achieved less success in the United States, but greater worldwide success, breaking the hundred million dollar mark in worldwide revenue.

In 1984, he made the first of his five appearances as the main character in his most famous role, in the science fiction film directed by James Cameron: The Terminator. A He then shot Red Sonja which was a box office flop and received very bad reviews.

During the 1980s, there was a huge market for action films with both Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone both becoming international stars. The roles Schwarzenegger played progressively reflected his humorous and sometimes self-parodying sense of humor, including frequent bad jokes, distancing themselves from their roles of the action hero characters of yesteryear.

After becoming a Hollywood star, he made a number of successful films: Commando (1985), Raw Deal (1986), The Running Man (1987), and Red Heat (1988). it included future Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura.

During those years (mid-80s) he also shot the film Executor, by John Irvin (Raw Deal) with Kathryn Harrold. After shooting the film, Arnold was released from his four-film contract with producer Dino De Laurentiis.

Twins (1988), a comedy with Danny DeVito, was a turning point in his career, which was also successful. In 1990, with the help of Paul Verhoeven, he worked on the film science fiction Total Recall (1990), based on a short story Philip K. Dick, which brought Schwarzenegger ten million dollars and 15% of the box office, and good reviews. Later he released Kindergarten Cop (1990), which reunited him with Ivan Reitman: although it did not reap the same success as the previous one, it was a profitable film.

Schwarzenegger had a brief stint as a film director, first directing in 1990 an episode of the television series Tales from the Crypt, titled "The Switch" ("The Change") and, in 1992, with the television movie Christmas in Connecticut. Since then, he has not directed again.

His biggest commercial success came with the highest-grossing film of 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In 1993, the American National Association of Theater Owners named him the "International Star of the Decade." His next project in 1993 was the action comedy Last Action Hero, produced by himself, which was a resounding failure at the box office and received bad reviews, despite the fact that the cast included some renowned actors, such as Anthony Quinn, F. Murray Abraham and Ian McKellen. His next film, True Lies (1994), an action movie in the purest Hollywood style with touches of comedy, was another great commercial success in his career, where James Cameron took the reins of direction, and with Jamie Lee Curtis as the female lead, whose performance as Schwarzenegger's dimwitted wife won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

Shortly thereafter came the comedy Junior (1994), the last of his three collaborations with Ivan Reitman and again with Danny DeVito. This film earned Schwarzenegger his second Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor - Musical or Comedy. He then went on to film the action thriller Eraser (1996), another major commercial success produced by Warner Bros. where he gave life to a special agent who must protect a witness, played by the singer and model Vanessa Williams, and where Schwarzenegger was eclipsed by two other higher caliber actors: James Caan and James Coburn.

That same year, 1996, he also stars in the bland comedy A Troubled Father and then Batman & Robin (1997), where he played the villain Mr. Freeze. This was his last film before taking a break to recover from a back injury. After the failure of Batman & Robin , Schwarzenegger's career and the box office of his films fell into decline.

On November 8, 1999, Vince McMahon, Chairman of WWE, asked Schwarzenegger to appear on an episode of WWE Smackdown to increase viewership. Upon introducing himself, he received a standing ovation from the audience present. Schwarzenegger attacked and broke Triple H's nose for helping Stone Cold before the latter participated two days later in an event called Survivor Series.

Several projects starring Schwarzenegger were announced, including remakes of Planet of the Apes, and I Am Legend.

None of them came to fruition; instead, Schwarzenegger returned to film with the supernatural thriller End of Days (1999), then starred in the action films The Sixth Day (2000) and Collateral Damage (2002), although none of them stood out too much on the billboard. In 2003, he returned to appear in his most important franchise in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines , which grossed more than one hundred and fifty million dollars in the United States.

As a tribute to Schwarzenegger in 2002, Forum Stadtpark, a local cultural association in Graz, proposed to build an eighty-foot statue of the Terminator in a park in Graz. Schwarzenegger said he was flattered but thought that the money would be more useful in social projects.

His last films before turning to politics were a cameo in The Treasure of the Amazon with The Rock, and another cameo in the 2004 version of Around the World in 80 days starring Jackie Chan. In 2005 he appeared playing himself in The Kid & amp; I.

It was rumored that Schwarzenegger would reappear in Terminator: Salvation as the model T-800, but he denied it. His digitized face finally appeared in the film on the body of bodybuilder Roland Kickinger. In 2010 he made a cameo in the film The Expendables directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Return to cinema

His reappearance in the cinema occurs with The Expendables 2 which was released on August 17, 2012, along with other stars such as Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone

In 2014, he starred in the film Maggie with Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin. The film got mixed reviews but Schwarzenegger's dramatic performance garnered good reviews as he played a father desperately fighting to preserve his last moments with his daughter who is turning into a Zombie.

His penultimate film was Terminator Genesis in 2015, alongside other stars such as Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney. In 2017 she starred in Aftermath , based on the true story of a builder's revenge against the air traffic controller who caused the accident that killed all the passengers including his wife and daughter. The movie received good reviews towards Arnold for her portrayal. In February 2018, the role of Schwarzenegger in the new series Outrider, an Amazon western for which Schwarzenegger will also executive produce, was confirmed.

Political career

Schwarzenegger as governor in 2003.

Beginnings

Schwarzenegger is a member of the United States Republican Party. When he was an actor, his political ideas were far from those of other Hollywood stars, who usually tended to be from the United States Democratic Party and the progressive left. He became known to the public as a Republican during the 1988 presidential election by accompanying then-Vice President of the United States George H.W. Bush at a rally.

His first political job was as Chairman of the Board of Health, Fitness and Sport from 1990 to 1993. He was appointed by George H. W. Bush, who gave him the name Conan the Republican. He later became president of the California Sports and Fitness Board.

At the 2004 Republican National Convention Schwarzenegger clarified in a speech why he was a Republican:

I finally got here in 1968. What a special day! I remember coming with empty pockets but full of dreams, determination, desires. The 1968 presidential election campaign was in full development. I remember seeing the debate between Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey. A friend of mine who spoke some German and English translated it for me. I heard Humphrey talking about things that sounded like the socialism he had escaped from. But then I heard Nixon speaking. He talked about the free company, about not having to take the government to costs, about lowering taxes and strengthening the army. Listening to Nixon was like a breath of fresh air. I told my friend “What political party is he from?” My friend told me, "He's a Republican." So I said, "So, I'm a Republican." And since then I have been.

Schwarzenegger announced his candidacy for Governor on an August 6, 2003 episode of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. list of candidates, but his political views were unknown to most Californians. His candidacy was international news. He was dubbed the "Governator" (in a reference to Terminator). Schwarzenegger only participated in one of the debates with the other gubernatorial candidates on September 24, 2003.

On October 7, 2003, he was elected Governor with 48% of the vote. Schwarzenegger is the furthest-reaching immigrant in the political world of the United States since John G. Downey in 1862. he was re-elected on November 7, 2006, winning with 56% of the vote. Due to the fortune of his time as an actor, he did not accept the governor's salary of $175,000 per year.

In keeping with his party's conservative politics, Schwarzenegger initially vetoed laws legalizing gay marriages. He later changed his stance and supported repealing the constitutional amendment that prohibited them.

Departing from his party's politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger approved the study of stem cells and also a law to promote the reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases in companies, thus being the first political decisions of this type in the United States.

After exhausting two terms, and thus having served as long as possible as Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger steps down as Governor in favor of Jerry Brown after the gubernatorial election. He left the office of governor on January 3, 2011 after the transfer of powers.

Private life

Schwarzenegger and her former wife Maria Shriver in the 2008 edition of the Special Olympics in Shanghai.

In 1977, Schwarzenegger's autobiography and bodybuilding guide Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder was published and became a huge success. at Santa Monica College, he earned a correspondence Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, graduating with a degree in business and international economics in 1979.

In 1969, Schwarzenegger met Barbara Outland Baker, an English teacher with whom he lived until 1974. Schwarzenegger spoke of Barbara in his memoirs in 1977: "Basically it boils down to this: she was a no-nonsense girl who wanted a ordinary, solid life, and I wasn't sensible at all, and I hated the idea of an ordinary life". Baker described Schwarzenegger as "([a] totally charismatic, adventurous, athletic, joyous person", although he says that towards the end from the relationship he became "insufferable, wildly conceited, believed the world revolved around him". In 2006 Baker published his memoir, Arnold and Me: In the Shadow of the Austrian Oak (translated " Arnold and I: In the Shade of an Austrian Oak'). Although Baker presented Schwarzenegger in some chapters in an unflattering light in the book, Schwarzenegger contributed a foreword to the book and met with Baker for three hours. Baker says, for example, that she only found out he had been unfaithful after their breakup, and talks about a turbulent and passionate love life. Schwarzenegger made it clear that their memories differed. The couple met for six months. after her arrival in the United States. They shared an apartment in Santa Monica for three and a half years, spending a lot of time at the beach or backyard barbecues because they had very little money. Although Baker says that when she first met him he had "very little knowledge of good manners" and was not attracted to it, he also said: "[Arnold] is as self-made a man as it gets, he never received encouragement from his parents, from his family or from his brother.". He just had enormous determination and was very attractive… I will go to my grave knowing that Arnold loved me ».

Schwarzenegger later met another girl, Sue Moray, a Beverly Hills hairdresser in Venice Beach in July 1977. According to Moray, the couple were in an open relationship: "We were faithful when we were both in Los Angeles... but when he was away, we were both free to do what we wanted." Schwarzenegger met Maria Shriver at the Robert F. Kennedy tennis tournament in August 1977 and was in a relationship with both women until August 1978, when Moray (who knew of the relationship with Shriver) gave him an ultimatum.

He married television journalist Maria Shriver, niece of John F. Kennedy, in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on April 26, 1986, with whom he had four children: Katherine Eunice Shriver Schwarzenegger (born December 13 1989 in Los Angeles); Christina Maria Aurelia Schwarzenegger (born July 23, 1991 in Los Angeles); Patrick Arnold Schwarzenegger (born September 18, 1993 in Los Angeles); and Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger (born September 27, 1997 in Los Angels). In May 2011, he divorced his wife after 25 years of marriage, due to an infidelity committed with his former domestic worker with whom he also had a son.

In 1984, while filming Red Sonja and already engaged to Maria Shriver, Arnold also had a brief two-week torrid romance with actress and model Brigitte Nielsen. Both traveled throughout Europe before separating. However, Arnold explains in his autobiography that the relationship had ended, until Gitte (this is how she was artistically nicknamed Brigitte Nielsen) met him again in Los Angeles to tell him that she wanted a stable relationship.

Arnold replied, "Gitte, that was all on set. It was fun, but it wasn't anything serious. I'm already with the woman I want to marry and there's no place for you. If you're looking for a relationship with a Hollywood star, there are guys out there who are available and who will be attracted to you, especially your personality."

In his hometown of Graz the football stadium was renamed The Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium. But after the execution of Stanley Williams and the ensuing street protests, several local politicians began a campaign to remove the name of the stadium. Schwarzenegger upon learning of this, said: "To remove responsibility from politicians, as of today, I withdraw permission to use my name for the Liebenau Stadium," and set a deadline of just two days. Schwarzenegger's name was removed from the stadium in December 2005. Today the stadium is known as UPC-Arena.

On March 29, 2018, Schwarzenegger underwent emergency heart surgery due to complications from his aortic valve replacement, making a satisfactory recovery from surgery.

Business

Schwarzenegger has also had a successful career in the business world. After moving to the United States, and in an effort to improve himself, he set goals at the beginning of the year that he had to meet. At the age of thirty, Schwarzenegger was already a millionaire, before beginning his career in Hollywood. His financial independence was achieved through a series of investments. In 1968, Schwarzenegger and his friend Franco Columbu started a bricklaying business. The business grew thanks to their business savvy and the 1971 San Fernando earthquake. Schwarzenegger and Columbu used the profits from the masonry business to start a mail-order business, selling bodybuilding and fitness products and workout videos. Schwarzenegger used the profits from both deals to buy an apartment, investing the rest in real estate. In 1992, Schwarzenegger and his wife opened a restaurant in Santa Monica called Schatzi On Main. Schatzi literally means "little treasure," colloquially "honey". In 1998, he sold his restaurant and invested in a shopping center in Columbus, Ohio. Schwarzenegger spoke of those who helped him over the years: “I couldn't have learned business without a host of professors teaching me…from Milton Friedman to Donald Trump…and now, Les Wexner and Warren Buffett. I even learned a thing or two about Planet Hollywood, like when to go! And I did!» He is a part owner of Dimensional Fund Advisors, an investment firm.

In May 2004 and in 2007, he was named one of Time magazine's 100 people who help improve the world.

Planet Hollywood

Along with Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Demi Moore, he invested in the Planet Hollywood chain, although in early 2000 he decided not to continue, saying the company had not been successful enough and that he wanted to embark on other projects.

Net Earnings

A conservative estimate of Schwarzenegger's net earnings is between $100 million and $200 million. Over the years, he invested so much of his money that it is difficult to estimate his fortune, especially after the economic crisis from 2008-2010. In June 1997, Schwarzenegger spent $38 million on a private jet. Schwarzenegger once said, "Money doesn't buy happiness. Now I have fifty million but I was already happy when I was forty-eight." He also said: "I have managed to make a million many times as a businessman."

Spoofs

  • The Rainier Wolfcastle character of the TV series "The Simpsons" is a clear parody of this actor, his life and his career. Between both there are clear similarities, including the physical aspect, the marked German accent and that both jumped to fame with B-series action films.
  • Based on the character of Rainier, and at the time of the film, where he was still governor of California, Arnold appears caricatured as president of the United States in the 2007 film, "The Simpsons: The Film". In that film, Arnold is played by an imitator, against the classic custom of these characters.
  • So popular it was during the 1990s that Steven Spielberg himself created a character based on him for his series "Tiny Toons" called Arnold, the pitbull.
  • The Sven Swartenhummer, governor of California in the film Cars is a reference to Arnold. Besides the fact of appearing like a Hummer 1
  • The characters sergeant Metalic and Android 16 of the anime Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series are two androids clearly based on the cyborg T-800 played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the films of the Terminator franchise.
