The Arizona flag consists of 13 red and gold rays in the upper half, representing the 13 original colonies that formed the United States and the colors of the Spanish flag, in homage to the discoverers Spaniards who came to these lands, such as Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca or Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. The lower half is dark blue, representing the Colorado River, and the copper star in the center symbolizes the mining industry of this State.
