He was born in Fusignano (province of Ravenna, Italy) on February 17, 1653. He was the son of one of the most important families in this city. Since childhood he studied violin in his hometown. In 1666 he travels to Bologna, where he studies with Giovanni Benvenuti and Leonardo Brugnoli. In 1670 he became a member of the Bologna Philharmonic Academy. Five years later he settled in Rome, where he was adopted and housed by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, nephew of Pope Alexander VIII.
