Arabic name day

There are two main types of Arabic onomastics: classical and modern.

Classical Arabic name days

Proper nouns were composed of the following elements:

• Kunya (كنية), nicknamemost of the time it represents a respectful and intimate way to address people. Formed by the filiation particle (a)bu (أبو), "padre [de]", followed by the name of the first son male or exceptionally of another name for some other cause. For women the particle is umm(u) (أم), "mother [of]".

In Persia the kunya was mainly employed by non-Arab Muslims.

Note: the word kunya, initially "overname", has evolved into Spanish alcurnia with the meaning of "linage, descent, stirpe": al-kunya ▪ alcunia ▪ sister (alcunha in Portuguese)  alcurnia.

• Ism (GRUNTING) Name is the one that corresponds to a person and precedes family indicators. It can be simple or composite.

simple: Ahmad, Ibrahim, Muhammad, Yusef, Ali, Omar.

v.g. compounds: for example, with ‘abd (slave of), followed by one of the 99 names of God: Abd Allah (God's slave) Abd al-Nasir (Slave of the Victorious) Abd al-Rahman (Clement slave), etc. (the female version is amat“slave (of)” or “server (of)”); with a word followed ad-Din (from religion): Lisan ad-Din (Law of Religion), Nasr ad-Din (Victoria de la Religión), Nur ad-Din (Light of Religion).

• Christians: To a certain extent, the majority of Christian Arabs have names that do not differ from those of their Muslim neighbors, but Christian Arabs do not use specifically Muslim names such as Muhammad (Mahoma). There are also Arabic versions of first names (e.g., the names of saints) and the names of Greek, Armenian or Assyrian origin. The adoption of European names, especially French (to a lesser extent, Spanish in Morocco), has been a convention for centuries for Christian Arabs, especially (but not only) in the Middle East. Thus, George Habash, Charles Helou, Camille Chamoun, etc. Other examples of names used exclusively by Christian Arabs are in honor of Jesus Christ, as Abdul Yasu (“slave of Jesus” or “server of Jesus”; the female form is Amat Yasu, “slave of Jesus” or “server of Jesus”), Abdul (Amat) Masih (slave or servant of Messiah), Maryam umm Yasu (Mary, mother of Jesus) Yusef abu Yasu (Joseph, father of Jesus) Yasu ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary) Yasu ibn Yusef (Jesus, son of Joseph) and Yasu Ullah (Jesus of Allah, Jesus of God); Abd al-Ilaahan equivalent to the Muslim name Abdullah or Abdallah ("God's slave" or "God's servant") is also used by Christian Arabs.

Converts to Christianity can change their name if it is specific to Islam. A man named Samir does not have to change this, because it simply means "nice friend" and there is no Islamic background, and a man named Isma'il also does not have to change this, because Isma'il has both Christian and Muslim meaning, since Isma' il is the Arabic form of “Ishmael.” Instead, a woman named Fatima may choose to change her name to separate herself from her Muslim background and prevent confusion, as Fatima was the daughter of Muhammad.

• Nasab (نسب), genealogy or descent (patronymic), indicates the idea of filiation that, if not abbreviated, can reach, if known, the most remote ancestor. Formed by the union of the child's name with the filiation particle ibn / ben (bin), son [of], plus the name of the father/grandfather/bisgrandfather/tagranuelo/etc. In some places it is used uld instead of benwith the same meaning. For women the particle is bent (bint), daughter.

• Laqab (لقب), nickname It's a nickname that was added sometimes. It mainly served to praise or ridicule a person.

v.g. To Mansurthe victorious; Al AhdabThe hunchback. Al TauilThe long one.

• (I)smu Mansab (Technical and منصب) is a name indicated by the profession. It was another nickname that was also added sometimes.

v.g. Al Katib, the scribe; "Al Fayar", the potter.

• Nisba (نسبة), kinship, alliance, affiliation. Sometimes one or more adjectives indicating tribe, nation, origin, etc. complement the idea of nasab affiliation.

v.g. Al-Juarismi (of Corasmia) Al Andalusí (from Al Andalus); Al Mursi (from Murcia); Al Sebtí (from Ceuta); Al Tabarí (from Tabaristan); Al Balansi(from Valencia); "Al Iskandarí" (from Iskandaria or Alexandria).

Translation:
Father of Karim, Muhammad, the handsome, son of Nidal, son of Abdulaziz, the Palestinian
(karim means “generous”, Muhammad (muhammad) means “praised”, jamīl means “handsome”, abdulazīz means “slave of the Magnificent” or “servant of the Magnificent”, and this is one of the 99 names of God.)
Abu Karim is a kunya, Muhammad is his ism, al-Jamil is a laqab, Nidal is his father (nasab i>), Abdulaziz is his grandfather (second generation nasab) and "al-Filistini" It is nisba from his family.

Modern Arabic name days

Arabic names in most countries have been simplified and now consist of a personal name (ism) plus a family name (nasab). In certain circumstances and depending on the personality, the name is preceded by Mudir ("director"), Muley (equivalent to "Excellence& #34;), Sheikh, Sidi (equivalent to "Mr. Don"), Hady (pilgrim to Mecca), etc.

v.g. Said Auita, Mohamed Ali, Jalid Machal, Ahmed Iasín, Yaser Arafat (pseudonymous) Sheikh Ahmed Iasín.

Not all Arabic names are native Arabic. Many have Persian, Afghan, Pakistani, Malay, and Turkish origins.
