Anoxia

ImprimirCitar

In medicine, anoxia is the almost total lack of oxygen in a tissue. It is a state in which the amount of oxygen in the body's cells is not satisfied. Anoxia may be due to lung pathology (anoxic anoxia); to the decrease or alteration of hemoglobin that prevents the fixation of oxygen in sufficient quantities (anemic anoxia); to decreased blood circulation (ischemic anoxia) or to the inability of the tissues to fix oxygen (histotoxic anoxia).

Anoxia in medicine and physiology

In medicine, anoxia is an unusual name for suffocation; the medical term for oxygen deficiency is hypoxia.

Plants

In plants, it is caused by anoxia of the soil or of the surrounding water in the case of aquatic plants. The production of a stress hormone, abscisic acid, is triggered, especially in higher plants.
