Saint Lucia, a small country in the Caribbean, gained its independence from the United Kingdom only on February 22, 1979. Since then it has retained the acting British monarch as head of state, who It is represented by a Governor General based on the island, who performs basically protocol functions. The head of government is the prime minister, who is elected by the members of the most important political party in Parliament.
