The President of Pakistan is the head of state of Pakistan, exercises the country's highest representation and is commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces. The former British Raj was divided into two independent states on August 15, 1947, Pakistan and India. In the Pakistani state, Liaquat Ali Khan was elected Prime Minister. Pakistan was incorporated as a Dominion within the Empire, granting it full independence, but having King George V of the United Kingdom as head of state and a Governor General as the King's representative. Finally in 1956 Pakistan became a republic.
