Social, sports and cultural clubs
The institutions
In Peru the clubs are civil associations, some non-profit or also corporations. The most important are located in Metropolitan Lima and are characterized by having a variable social, recreational, sports and cultural presence.
It was a group of English and Germans who founded in Lima in 1835 the first club in Peru called Salón de Comercio y Librería de Lima. It was conceived primarily as a meeting center for businessmen and also as the basis for the publication of a commercial newsletter. The vast majority of the partners were foreigners, to the point that the calls for meetings that were announced through the press were written in English. In 1848, this institution was renamed English Club. In 1858, it had 121 members, of which only 55 were Peruvians. However, the institution disappeared.
The oldest Peruvian club still in activity is the National Club, founded in 1855 in rented apartments on the upper floors of the Hotel del Universo in Plazuela del Teatro, within the historic center of Lima. After successive changes of location, this institution was located in its final headquarters in Plaza San Martín where it remains to this day. Clubs such as the Lima Cricket and Football Club in Magdalena Nueva, founded in 1859, also stand out for their long institutional history; the Union Club, founded in 1868; the Lima Regatas Club, founded in 1875 in Chorrillos and the British Phoenix Club, founded in 1879. The Lima Golf Club, founded in 1924 in San Isidro, is recognized for having one of the oldest golf courses in the basin. Peaceful.
The Lima Regatta Club is recognized as the most important club in South America due to the extent of its membership and for having five social, sports and country headquarters. El Bosque Country Club is recognized for being the largest country club in South America. Meanwhile, the sports clubs Alianza Lima, Sporting Cristal and Universitario de Deportes (which owns the largest stadium in South America) are the most popular in Peru.
In clubs, among the very diverse sports that are practiced, one in particular always enjoys the majority preference of the members. In addition to those sports that require a much larger infrastructure, generally the facilities of the main Peruvian clubs are also equipped for the practice of table tennis, chess, toad shooting, table football, billiards, billiards, gymnastics, weights, aerobics, martial arts, among others.
Except for military, police clubs, or clubs dependent on public or private institutions, some of the main Peruvian clubs are:
Clubs located in Metropolitan Lima
- The majority of major clubs are located in the middle-class areas (Southern Cone, East Cone countryside, Northern Cone spas and modern downtown areas). Some are in the provinces of Callao, Canta, Huaral, Cañete and Pisco (Ica).

The Departmental Clubs
In the main cities of the country there are a type of non-sports social clubs made up of migrants from the rest of the country and whose fundamental objectives are based on the geographical origin of said members. In their names they adopt the name of the Department from which their members originate (for example "Club Arequipa", "Club Ancash", "Club Apurímac", etc.). In addition to these "Departmental Clubs", there are also, with similar characteristics, numerous "Provincial Clubs" (for example "Club Piscobamba", etc.).
These clubs, in general, do not have major sports infrastructure and their activities are social (integration and reunion of countrymen, social assistance to the place of origin) and cultural (promotion of the arts, folklore, gastronomy, traditions and customs). of the department from which its partners originate). The partners, all countrymen, call each other "brothers" or also "countrymen".
Other clubs and associations
In Peru there are countless Student Centers, musical clubs, Mothers' clubs, Parents' Associations (APAFAs), Glass of Milk Program Committees, Retiree Associations, Senior Citizens' Clubs, etc. As well as the Armed and Police Forces (both officers and junior personnel), public institutions (workers of ministries and superintendencies), private institutions (bank workers, brewing industries, mining companies, etc.), associations of international character (Lions Club, Scouting, Rotary Club, etc.). Likewise, there is also the Classic Sports Automobile Club of Peru, the Benemérita Sociedad Founders of Independence and the associations or clubs of Peruvians abroad, among others.
