The Mayor of Lima is the elected official, every four years (until 1998 every 3 years), to preside over the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima.
The Mayor is the most important one-man figure in the Province of Lima, in turn the most populous province in Peru. Head of the winning list; responsible for the municipal public administration and city services; political representative of the municipality; and president of the council, he concentrates a set of formal and informal faculties that place him in a privileged condition of municipal political life.
The Mayor acts simultaneously as Metropolitan Mayor and Regional President of Lima (since 2007). On the other hand, the Metropolitan Mayor of Lima is also Mayor of the District of Cercado de Lima.
The current mayor of Lima is Rafael López Aliaga
The mayors of Lima in the Viceroyalty and the beginning of the Republic
Palacio de la Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima.
The Cabildo or City Hall of Lima in the viceregal era was presided over by two ordinary mayors (first and second vote), who were elected annually.
- The mayor of the first vote was in charge of the ornato and trade.
- The second-voice mayor was in charge of military aspects such as the defense of the city.
After the Republic was proclaimed in 1821, the old structures of the viceroyalty municipalities remained almost unchanged. For example, two ordinary mayors continued to be elected and the number of councilors did not vary or varied very little. The conservative Constitution of 1839 did not mention the municipalities, for which they ceased in 1840, passing some of their functions to the police departments.
The Constitution of 1856 restored the municipal governments and in 1857 the Municipality of Lima was reborn, this time presided over by a single mayor, who could be replaced by the deputy mayor only in cases of absence.
