The Goya Awards were created by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 1986.

In the first two editions (1986 and 1987) the Academy only awarded a single award for best screenplay, regardless of whether it was original or adapted, both awards falling on adaptations of novels. As of the III edition of 1988, the Academy instituted the categories of best original screenplay and best adapted screenplay.

The following list shows the list of all the winners of the Goya Awards for Best Original Screenplay since the III edition of 1988, and also those awarded in the two previous editions.

The screenwriter who has won the most Goya awards for "best original script" is Alejandro Amenábar, with 4 awards, followed by Mateo Gil with 2 awards (both in collaboration with Amenábar). The screenwriter who has won the most Goya awards for "best adapted script" is Rafael Azcona, with 5 awards, followed by Fernando Fernán Gómez and José Luis Cuerda with 2 awards each (in the case of Cuerda both awards in collaboration with Azcona). The screenwriter who has won the most awards by adding both categories is Rafael Azcona, with 6 awards, followed by Alejandro Amenábar, with 4 awards, and Mateo Gil with 3 awards.
