The Goya Awards were created by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 1986.

The following list shows the list of all the winners of the Goya Award for Best New Director since the creation of this award in the IV edition of 1989.

The Academy also awards the Goya Award to the best director (not novel) since the first edition of 1986.

The directors who have won the award for "best new director" and "best director" are, in temporal order, Fernando León de Aranoa (1997, 1998 and 2002), Alejandro Amenábar (1996, 2001 and 2004) and Juan Antonio Bayona (2007, 2012 and 2017).

The new directors who have won the award for “best film” with their first film are Agustín Díaz Yanes (for Nobody will talk about us when we have died, 1995), Alejandro Amenábar (for Tesis, 1996), Achero Mañas (for El Bola, 2000), Raúl Arévalo (for Tarde para la ira, 2017) and Pilar Palomero (by The Girls, 2021). The five also won the "best new director" award with the same film.
